Steryle Grant WHISTLER, 79, of Independence, and former owner and operator of the Whistler Building supply, died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 22, 1999, at his home. Mr. Whistler was born Oct. 2, 1919, at Elk City, to Edward Owen and Edna Lou (Rose) Whistler. He grew up in Elk City and attended there, graduating from Elk City High School. He attended Independnece Community College. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater from 1941 until his discharge in November 1945. He owned and operated the Whistler Building Supply Co., from 1965 to 1995, when he sold the business. He married Lillian Ruth RHODES on Nov. 26, 1941. Mr. Whistler was a member of First Christian Church, Independence, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Dewlin Dix Post #1186. Survivors include his wife, Lillian; a son, Stephen of St. mary; one daughter, Kris ROSENTRETER of Houston, and one grandson. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Robbins Cemetery. Friends may call at Potts Chapel until 8 p.m. Friday, and until 9 a.m. Saturday, at which time the casket will be closed. The family may be contacted at the home, 308 W. Sixth Street, Independence. Memorial remembrances have been suggested to go to First Christian Church. Remembrances may be received at the chapel.
