He wasn't a riverboat captain, though - he worked in food service (managing restaurants and then working as a quartermaster for the army, and then he lived in Thailand for a while.) He died in 1987. Now, I've heard family stories about old Mr. Pever running up and down the river on gambling boats in his youth (in the company of Rose Engel - his future sister-in-law - and her husband Frank Vosier). I don't know if we're out of the NC line or not...I'll have to ask other family members, but Thomas Paver sounds really familiar.
