The Independence Daily Reporter Thursday October 7, 1937 Jack Rabbit on Lawn At Courthouse Gives Road Foreman a Scare. Montgomery county may not be so wild as in pioneer ddays but sometimes it gets a little wooly, or perhaps a little furry. Anyway--and there are two witnesses to this yarn--a big jack rabbit almost knocked down Bill TURPIN, county road foreman, on the courthouse lawn this morning. "That rabbit came from somewhere out of the great northwest," declared Perry AKERS, chairman of the board of county commissioners who declared he would sign an affidavit about it. "He ran along the east lawn and darn near bowled Turpin over. We have another witness in the WPA engineer's office, too." The big jack, he said, was headed for Oklahoma and disappeared to the south.
