The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Thursday September 30, 1937 Death Removes James Sandford. Attorney Had Practices Law Here for 20 Years. James Fenner SANFORD, 55, an Independence attorney for 20 years, died Wednesday night at 9:30 in Mercy hospital following a month's illness. Exhaustion following an attack of typhoid fever was given as the cause of death. Mr. Sanford was born Dec. 27, 1881, in Coulterville, Ill., where he attended public and high schools. May 13, 1898, he entered the law office of Adam Russell in Coulterville, serving his apprenticeship and was admitted to the Illinois bar Dec. 11, 1907. He formed a partnership of Russell and Sandford and was prominent in civic affairs for several years. He served as a member of the Coulterville board of education for seven years and for a time was president of the board. He was city attorney there for several years. At one time Mr. Sanford was the Republican nominee for state attorney of Illinois and was a member of the county committee. Mr. Sandford moved to Independence, December, 1917 and was admitted to the Kansas bar on May 20, 1918. On Jan. 13, 1919 he was appointed assistant county attorney and later resigned Dec. 1, 1920 to enter private law practice. He is survived by one son, Roland of Sacramento, Calif. Two brothers, William and John are also believed to be living but there whereabouts is unknown. The body is in the Amos-Rodrick Funeral home pending funeral arrangements.
