The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Wednesday October 27, 1937 Rites For An Early Settler. Mrs. Sarah Brown Laid to Rest Tuesday. Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Ann Helms BROWN, 77-year-old resident of rural Independence, who died Monday evening at her home west of Independence were held Tuesday afternoon from the Potts chapel. Rev. Simmons of Elk City was in charge and burial was in Oak Hill cemetery at Elk City. The deceased was bron October 12, 1860, in Newton county, Indiana, and in 1879 came to Kansas and settled in this section. She had been a resident here for the past 57 years. Her death was attributed to heart disease. Her second husband, E.H. BROWN, preceded here in death on January 24, 1937. Surviving are: a son, James W. HELMS of rural Elk City; a daughter, Mrs. Jesse D. WOLFE of rural Independence and a twin sister, Mrs. Martha CROSSON of rural Independence.
