The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Wednesday September 8, 1937 Death Calls M.G. Miller. Funeral Services Thursday For Longtime Kansan. Michael Grier MILLER, 83, a resident of Kansas for the past 53 years, died early this morning at the rural home of Mrs. Minnie Miller, North Fifth street road, after a short illness. He came here last spring form Longton and had made his home with his son, George C. Miller of rural route four, until he became ill and then was taken to the Miller home where he passed away. Survivors are eight children. They are Robert Miller, May, Okla., Frank of Longton, Clayton of Conway Springs, Eunice of Tulsa, Mrs. Florence OVERFIELD, Sycamore, George Miller, Independence, and Helen and Grace, who live with their mother. Six grandchildren also survive. Michael Grier Miller was born July 23, 1854, at Danville, Pa., and lived there until four years of age at which time he moved to Schoolcraft, Mich., with his parents. He grew to manhood at Schoolcraft and March 23, 1884, was united in marriage ot Mary BIDLEMAN at Great Bend, Kas. To this union, four children were born, three of whom with their mother preceded Mr. Miller in death. On Aug. 15, 1892, Mr. Miller and Minnie E. MILLARD were united in marriage and eight years later the family moved to Chetopa where the family home wa made until 1912 when they removed to Longton. The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church. Funeral services will be private and held at the Potts Funeral chapel at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The Rev. Harold Humbert of the First Christian church will officiate the rites. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.

The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Wednesday September 8, 1937 John R. Hobson. Funeral services for John R. HOBSON, 78, Wilson county, farmer, will be held Thursday afternoon at the Neodesha Methodist church. Hobson died yesterday morning at his home east of Neodesha. He had been ill about six weeks. The wife survives.

The Independence Daily Reporter Mongtomery County Wednesday September 8, 1937 Mrs. Dora Ashby. Funeral services were held this afternoon at Coffeyville for Mrs. Dora Belle ASHBY, 67, widow of A. F. Ashby, who died in a Coffeyville hospital Tuesday morning. Two children, Mrs. LeRoy WILLIAMS of Amarillo and J.W. Ashby of Pittsburg survive.

They came from Mecklenburg Co North Carolina but Noah was born in Lincoln County NC abt 1829. Noah's wife died in Mecklenburg Co NC in 1882. He may have come there with several of his children because the majority of the children ended up in Cherokee or Crawford Counties. Three of the girls went back to North Carolina, 2 of which were widowed and living 1930 in Taylorsville, Alexander Co NC and all three died there. P. Norton, president of the Cherokee Commercial Company at Cherokee, is one of the foremost business men of Crawford county, a man of enterprise, industry, ability, and a high degree of public spirit, and during the past quarter of a century during which he has been a resident of the county he has participated actively in the work of general progress and upbuilding throughout this section of southeastern Kansas. The business firm of which he is the head is a notably reliable and commercially sound company, and their business is extensive throughout the town and country about Cherokee. Lewis Schwab is the general manager and treasurer of the firm, and its other members are J. G. Schwab and M. C. Bolick. It is one of the pioneer general merchandise houses at Cherokee. Mr. Norton, who has been in this business in Cherokee since 1893, and who took up his permanent abode in Crawford county in 1880, was born in Allegany county, New York, on the Genesee river, October 21, 1842, being of one of the old families of that section and of English and Scotch descent. The original ancestors were three brothers who came from England and settled on Martha's Vineyard among the first to locate at that place. Mr. Norton's parents were Leonard and Margaret (Carr) Norton, both native New Yorkers. The mother's father was a Revolutionary soldier, and, being captured at the Wyoming Massacre, was held prisoner by the Indians for seven years before his final release. Leonard Norton, who died at the advanced age of eighty-four years, was a farmer by occupation, a Republican in politics and a member of the Presbyterian church; his good wife passed away at the age of seventy-two. Their four children were Charles, of Cherokee; Emma Benard, of Illinois; Alice Shannon,! of McCune, and George P. Mr. Norton was reared on a farm in New York, and his schooling was what he obtained in the public schools and by self-application. The family moved out to Missouri in 1858, and there he learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed very successfully for many years, and many buildings at Cherokee and in Crawford county show evidence of his skill and fine handicraft. In 1861 he joined the Missouri State Militia and Home Guards, and at the beginning of 1863 he became a member of Company F, Eighteenth Illinois Infantry, under Colonel Webber and Captain H. H. Benner. During his eighteen months' service he was at Little Rock, Arkansas, and at various Louisiana points. After the war he settled in McDonough county, Illinois, and, as above stated, came out to Crawford county in 1880. In McDonough county he was married to Miss Nancy J. McClure, who was born, reared and educated in that county, and they have worked together for what they have gained of the world's material comforts and are highly esteemed members of Crawford county society. They had one daughter, Viola, who was the wife of Robert A. Bolick, cashier of the Cherokee Bank. She died November 28, 1904. Mr. Norton has long taken an active interest in educational affairs, and is now president of the local school board. He is a Republican in politics, and has for years served as quartermaster of Shiloh Post No. 56, G. A. R. He is an elder in the Presbyterian church. There follows the obituary notice of Mr. Norton's lately deceased daughter: Died at her home in this city Monday, November 28, 1904, Viola, beloved wife of Robert A. Bolick, and daughter of G. P. and Nannie Norton, aged 37 years and 22 days. Services were conducted by Rev. E. W. Beason, of Pleasanton, Kansas, at the Presbyterian church, in this city, of which the deceased was a member, after which interment was made in the Cherokee cemetery. A husband and five children are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and a kind and loving mother, but their loss is her eternal gain, leaving in this world the evidence of triumphant faith, passing peacefully to her eternal home, without fear, relying in Him who has gone to prepare a place for you. Viola May Norton was born in McDonough county, Illinois, November 6, 1867. She removed with her parents to Cherokee county, Kansas, in the fall of 1880, and has since resided in the near locality. She was married to Robert A. Bolick December 15, 1887. To this union were born five children all of whom are living. She united with the Presbyterian church when about twenty years of age, and has been a consistent member thereof until her death, November 28, 1904. He may have died in Baxter Springs between 1920 and 1930. They had one daughter Edna M Dills born abt Nov 1898. After William died Julia moved back to North Carolina where she died. The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Tuesday September 7, 1937 Mrs. E.J. Smith Services Here. Former Resident Died Saturday at Ellsworth. Funeral services for Mrs. Ella J. SMITH, who died of a heart attack, Saturday, at Ellsworth, were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Jackson chapel. The Rev. R.L. Mobley of the Nazarene church officiated at the rites. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery. Mrs. Smith, widow of M. H. Smith of this city, is survived by a son and three daughters. they are L.B. Smith of Aurora, Mo., Helen BLACK of this city, and Gladys OSTROWSEY, Winstead, Conn., and Ida SHOBERT of Okmulgee, Okla. The deceased was born in Steuben county, Pa., on July 9, 1871, and spent her childhood there. She was united in marriage to M.H. Smith at Mansfield, Pa., in May 1889. The couple moved to Smethport and removed to Independence in 1907. Mr. Smith passed away six years ago.

The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Monday September 6, 1937 Funeral at Parsons for Former Independence Man.. Funeral services for Don CLEVELAND, former Independence resident, who died in a Houston, Tex., hospital Friday, will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the First Christian church at Parsons. Masonic rites will also be held. Mr. and Mrs. Charles SHIPLEY of this city plans to attend the services. Mr. Cleveland is survive dby his wife, Bridie, and his parents, who reside in St. Louis. He was employed at an embalmer here in 1934.

The Independence Daily Reporter Monday September 6, 1937 Mercy Hospital Notes. William Lee JOHNSON, 508 South Sixteenth, underwent a tonsillectomy this morning. Delores MAXWELL of this city has been admitted for a minor operation. Billy MAIN of Elk City, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orin Main is receiving treatment for a fractured left arm. Mrs. Jessie AVEY of Picher, Oklahoma, has been dismissed. Mrs. O.S. BROWN and infant daughter, 824 North Penn have been dismissed and taken to their home.

The Independence Daily Reporter Friday September 3, 1937 Teacher Hired.--County Superintendent Manie Weber reported today that Catherine HUSTON of Cherryvale has been hired to teach at Stone, district 17. Her salary will be $45 per month.

The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Friday September 3, 1937 Death Claims Ruben Everett. Resident of City for Eight Years Dies Yesterday. Death took Ruben Bennington EVERETT, 76, at the home of his sister, Mrs. E.R. HAYES, 205 South Sixteenth, Thursday afternoon at 4:35. Everett had been in failing health for many months and was suffering from a heart ailment. Besides his sister at whose home he passed away, Mr. Everett leaves a niece, Mrs. Edna REDDY of Independence, and a nephew, C.F. HAYES, 309 South Fifteenth. Three nephews and two nieces also survive. Mrs. Everett passed away several years ago. They had no children. Ruben Bennington Everett was born at Washington, In., on Feb. 11, 1861 and spent his boyhood there. He moved to Oswego at an early age and spent the major part of his life there, coming to Independence eight years ago. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at nine o'clock from the Potts chapel with Rev. H.L. Duncan of the Assembly of God church in charge. Brother Mobley of the Nazarene church will assist in the rites. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.

The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Friday September 3, 1937 Baxter Funeral. Funeral services for Jon Enoch BAXTER, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Baxter, who died Thursday morning, were held at the grave in Mount Hope cemetery with rev. H.L. Duncan, pastor of the Assembly of God church, in charge. Burial was under the direction of the Webb Funeral home.

The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Friday September 3, 1937 Edward G. Walls. Edward G. WALLS, 72, Caney resident, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John RAY, in Long Beach, Calif., on August 28. A son, E.T. Walls of Caney, also survives.

The Independence Daily Reporter Montgomery County Friday September 3, 1937 Mary C. Witwer. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary C. WITWER, 67, were held this afternoon at Coffeyville and burial was made in the Robbins cemetery. Ms. Witwer, widow of John M. Witwer, died Wednesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Jasper GILLILAND, southwest of Coffeyville. Another daughter and two sons survive.
