    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: VernPaul Surnames: McGugin Rutledge Ewing Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.montgomery/1814.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you very much for the information and, of course, the quick response is well appreciated. I had thought Walter was too young among the McGugin boys to be Anna's husband. I had pretty much eliminated most of the others. This straightens it out fine. As far as the folks from Bates Co., Missouri, plus a passle from Vernon Co., Missouri, most were run off their properties during the Civil War. Many crossed over into Kansas, particularly Linn and Anderson Counties - like my family. Some remained in Kansas, some returned to Missouri, and then again some went back to Kansas. The website, http://www.millersparanormalresearch.com/Pages/Missouri_And_The_Civil_War.htm adds some insight: Because of the attack on Lawrence (Kansas) and in an effort to cut the guerillas and the Rangers off from their supporters, General Thomas Ewing issued his infamous Order #11. This order forced all residents in Cass and Bates counties and parts of Vernon and Jackson counties to vacate their homes within fifteen days. All grain, hay and food supplies were confiscated by Union troops and all homes and outbuildings were burned to the ground. (My Rutledge family lost everything; patriarch Fletcher Rutledge was beaten horribly and left crippled the re! st of his life. He remained in Kansas.) These counties became known as "The Burnt District." Basically, this order was a "license to kill" for the Union army and they ravished these counties, burning everything in site and killing the men and young boys whom they suspected to be Southern Sympathizers. Woman and children were often left with nothing but the clothing on their backs and had to travel great distances to find a safe haven. Many died of starvation and exposure while in route. This action was unique during the Civil War in that it was specifically directed against a civilian population. It affected more than 20,000 individuals. It would be years before many of these families would be able to return home. When they did return home, they returned to burnt out structures and desolate land. vp Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [KSMONTGO] BALDEN Family
    2. I would love to locate my gg grandparents, William Ambrose & Emley Guyll BALDEN. We don't know where they were buried. Their dtr, Sarah Elizabeth BALDEN was b. 23 February 1871 in Cherryvale, Montgomery Co., KS. In the 1880 Clarence TWP, Barton Co., KS census, Sarah shows up with her older brother John Samuel Balden & their grandparents, Cannada and Louisa BALDEN. Interestingly, none of the BALDEN family have been found in the 1870 census. Would there be a KS state census in 1871 or sometime after on-line? Thank you, Jerry Vernon

I am Susan Neff, Historian at the Dr. James Ford Historic Home in Wabash, Indiana. I am trying to find the burial location for the following married couple who were last known to have lived in Parker - the 1875 Kansas census (attached) enumerates this family in Cherokee Township, Montgomery County, Kansas; and prior to that for 1850 and 1860 in Lake County, Indiana. GEORGE LYMAN FOSTER - dob 20 Apr 1820 in Athens, Pennsylvania; dod 13 Apr 1877, Kansas. LUCY HATHAWAY FOSTER - dob 14 Apr 1828 in Sherburne, Illinois; dod 30 Nov 1876, Kansas. George and Lucy left at least eight children at the time of their deaths. Born in Indiana were: Volney (1851), Edson (1853), Albert (1857), Eliza (1859), Emaline (1862), Martha (1865) and Marilla (1868). Born in Kansas was Julia (1872). The orphaned children were all sent back to Lake County, Indiana (near South Bend and Chicago) to be raised by relatives. They all married and have many descendants who are anxious to visit the gravesite(s) of George & Lucy Foster. We are also interested to learn if there may have been an epidemic in late 1876 that caused the deaths of George and Lucy. Otherwise, we are unable to determine their causes of death. Are there newspapers available that covered this location during the period November 1876 to April 1877? Thank you in advance for any assistance or referrals you can provide.
