Steryle Grant WHISTLER, 79, of Independence, and former owner and operator of the Whistler Building supply, died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 22, 1999, at his home. Mr. Whistler was born Oct. 2, 1919, at Elk City, to Edward Owen and Edna Lou (Rose) Whistler. He grew up in Elk City and attended there, graduating from Elk City High School. He attended Independnece Community College. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater from 1941 until his discharge in November 1945. He owned and operated the Whistler Building Supply Co., from 1965 to 1995, when he sold the business. He married Lillian Ruth RHODES on Nov. 26, 1941. Mr. Whistler was a member of First Christian Church, Independence, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Dewlin Dix Post #1186. Survivors include his wife, Lillian; a son, Stephen of St. mary; one daughter, Kris ROSENTRETER of Houston, and one grandson. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Robbins Cemetery. Friends may call at Potts Chapel until 8 p.m. Friday, and until 9 a.m. Saturday, at which time the casket will be closed. The family may be contacted at the home, 308 W. Sixth Street, Independence. Memorial remembrances have been suggested to go to First Christian Church. Remembrances may be received at the chapel.

    3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Friday September 24, 1999 Delmar Foley. Delmar Wayne FOLEY, 85, of Good Samaritan Village, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999. Mr. Foley was born June 4, 1914, at Lewiston, Mo., to Joseph E. and Bertha (Cheatum) Foley. He married Wilma HAYES on June 12, 1947, at St. Louis. Mrs. Foley preceded her husband in death on Feb. 25, 1989. Mr. Foley was a veteran of World War II, and was also active in American Legion and VFW. He had lived in Salina, Coffeyville, and Hays. Mr. Foley worked as a driver for Continental Trailways Bus Line. Later he drove trucks cross-country. In 1996, Mr. Foley moved to Winfield from Salina to be near his family. Survivors include his son, Mike Foley of Winfield; and his dauther, Patty HAYES, of Richland, Wash. Graveside services are 1:30 p.m. Monday, at Roselawn Cemetery, Salina. Swisher-Taylor, and Morris Funeral Home is in charge of services. Visitation is 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial are suggested to go to VFW of Good Samaritan Village.

    3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Thursday September 23, 1999 Gladys Smith. Gladys Sadie SMITH, 92, formerly of Coffeyville, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at Medicalodge of Dewey where she had been a resident since 1995. Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 21, 1907, in Labette County, near Oswego, to David and Murttie May (Leka) Hollis. She married Ether F. Smith on March 9, 1929, near Oswego. The couple farmed until 1948. At that time, Mr. and Mrs. SMith entered the Assemblies of God ministry. They pastored churches in Kansas and Oklahoma and retired in Coffeyville. Mr. Smith preceded his wife in death in 1982. Besides a minister's wife, Mrs. Smith was a seamstress, and sewed for many people. About nine yeasr ago, she suffered a stroke that left her completely helpless. Survivors include two sons, Carl of Soap Lake, Wash., James of Santa Clarita, Calif.; two daughters, Ruth GILSTRAP, of Bartlesville, and Naomi Elliott of Copan; two brothers, Oliver HOLLIS, of Topeka, and Ray Hollis, of Godfrey, Ill.; two sisters, Nora MILLER of Coffeyville and Hazel ROBINETTE of Sarasota, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Edgewood Chapel, Coffeyville. Burial will be at Lake Creek Union Cemetery, Bartlett. Friends may call until 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

    3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Wednesday September 22, 1999 Pamela Ledford. Pamela Ann LEDFORD, 58, of Sedan, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at her home. Mrs. Ledford was born Sept. 13, 1941 at Woodward, Okla., to James Allison and Johnnie Mae (Bodenheimer) TRAVIS. She married William Carlisle Ledford on Nov. 12, 1973, at Powell, Wyo. Mrs. Ledford was a homemaker and a member of the American Bloodhoud Club and the Wichita Kennel Club. Survivors include her husband, William; three sons, Brent of El Dorado, Brian Martin of Topeka, DelRay Travis of Woodward, Okla.; a daughters, Dee Ann RITTENHOUSE-THOMAS of Bakersfield, Calilf.; a stepson, Chuck Ledford of Wichita; one brother, Ben TRAVIS of Paige, Ariz.; three sisters, Leta Travis of Topeka, Peggy WAITE of Bakersfield, Calif., Virginia SCOTT of Abilene, Texas; a stepsister, Penny MOORE of Winfield; and four grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Graves-Baird Chapel, Sedan. Burial will be 3 p.m. Friday at Highland Cemetery, Wichita. Memorials have been established with the American Bloodhound Rescue Unit, and the Center for Basic Cancer Research.

    3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Wednesday September 22, 1999 Ruth Jones. Ruth Irene (Hayes) JONES, 73, died Sept. 14, 1999, at her home in North Hollywood, Calif. Mrs. Jones was born July 18, 1926, in Nowata County, to Charley H. and Ola (Taylor) Hayes. She graduated from school at Delaware. She married Don B. Jones and had been a resident of North Hollywood since her marriage. She worked in the family business. Survivors include her husband, Don; a son, Don, Jr., of the home; two daughters, Robin RALSTON of Irvine, Calif., and Kathy JONES of Sparks, Nev.; five brothers, Wayne and Charley of Coffeyville, Merle of Burbank, Calif., Dale of Denver, Colo., and Bob of Miami, Okla., and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church Chapel, Coffeyville. The family would welcome memorials to go the American Cancer Society.

    3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Wednesday September 22, 1999 Maxine Cummings. R. Maxine CUMMINGS, 68, of Chanute, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at St. Francis Via Christi Medical Center, Wichita. Mrs. Cummings was born April 1, 1931, at Sedan, to Ray Lewis and Gladys (Vernon) CULVER. She grew up in Sedan and graduated from Sedan High School. After her graduation she was employed at Sedan. She married Ray A. Cummings on Aug. 19, 1954, at Sedan. In 1969, the Cummings family moved to Chanute and had lived there since that time. Some of her hobbies were sewing, crocheting and playing Bingo. Mrs. Cummings was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her husband, Ray; five sons, Carroll, Ray, Kenneth, Keith,and Gail, all of Chanute; a daughter, Charlene WILLIAMS, also of Chanute; a sister, Enola REYNOLDS of Farmington, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, on East 14th Street, Chanute. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Memorial are suggested to go to American Diabetes Association.

    3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Sunday September 19, 1999 Henry Nichols. Mr. Henry L. NICHOLS, 48, died at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center on Friday, Sept. 17, 1999. He was born in Drew Mississippi on October 16, 1950 to Sandy and Pearlena (Jones) Nichols. Mr. Nichols moved to Coffeyville in 1972 and worked for five years at the Coop until he became disabled. He is survived by two sons, Marvis of Coffeyville and Henry of Joplin; one brother, Willie, of Coffeyvillle; one sister, Rosie BROWN, of Detroit and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by this parents and two brothers. Services will be conducted on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Hickory Creek Cemetery in Nowata County, Okla. Visitation will be held at the Patterson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Mrs. Fuller was born Aug. 21, 1910, at Peru, to Chauncey and Aurora (Hoskins) WINDSOR. She married Calle M. FULLER on Aug. 17, 1929, at Independence. Mr. Fuller preceded his wife in death in 1974. Mrs. Fuller was a homemaker. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Church. Surviving is one brother, Chest Windsor, of Sedan. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Riley Cemetery, Monett. Graves--Baird Funeral Home, Sedan, is in charge of arrangements.

    3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Wednesday September 15, 1999 Merle Kniffen. Merle A. KNIFFEN, 80, of rural Sedan, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Coffeyville. Mr. Kiffen was born April 20, 1919, at Elk Heart, to James Lemuel and Enda Pearl (Bingley) Kniffen. He lived in the Elk City area all his life. He served in the army during World War II, in Italy, as a mail clerk. Mr. Kinnfen is a lifelong member of First Christian Church, Elk City. He married Mae McFALL on Aug. 10, 1946. Mrs. Kniffen preceded her husband in death on Oct. 6, 1997. He had worked as a pipefitter and also farmed. Mr. Kniffen belonged to the Pipefitters Union, Local #171, Wichita. Survivors include a daughter, Susan CALLAWAY of Fort Smith, Ark.; a son, Steve of Sedan; a brother, Max of Howard; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Elk City. Arrangements are by Webb and Rodrick Funeral Home. Memorial are suggested to go to American Lung Association, Easter Seals or the March of Dimes.

    3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Tuesday September 14, 1999 Toby Clark. Toby S. CLARK, 82, of Independence, died at Monday afternoon,(Sept.13, 1999) at Mercy Hospital, Independence, where he had been admitted on Saturday. Mr. Clark was born Sept. 8, 1917, at Glade Springs, Va., the son of Toby Clark and Lucille (Widener) Clark. He grew up in Glade Springs and attended school there, graduating high school at Glade Springs. He joined the Army Air Corps on Feb. 6, 1942, where he served in the African and European Theaters, and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was discharged July 21, 1945. Mr. Clark worked as electrical contractor in Denver, until he retired in 1980 and moved to Independence. He maried Lillian I. FRANEK on February 10, 1946, at Denver, Co. Survivors include his wife, Lillian; two sons, Warren L. of Liberty, and Doug L., of Lakewood, Co.; one brother, Robert of Glade Springs, Va.; and one sister, Dorothy BLACKWELL, of Glade Springs, Va.; and four grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Potts Chapel, Independence. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, under the direction of Potts Chapel. Friends may call at Potts Chapel from noon until 8 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. on Friday. Memorial are suggested to the Leukemia Society of American, and remembrances may be received at the funeral home.

Miss Isaac is a 1986 graduate of Hillsboro High School, a 1991 graduate of Tabor College, and graduated from Emporia State University in 1995 with a masters of Library Science. She is employed as director of Learning Resources Center at Coffeyville Community College. Mr. Zimmerman graduated from Reedley High School in 1985, Bethel College in 1989, and Wichita Stae University in 1977, with a masters of Education. He worked ast cognitive therapist at Independence Living Resource Center. The couple plan to marry Nov. 13, 1999.

    3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Sunday September 12, 1999 Linda Kincaid. Linda Sue KINCAID, 49, of Burton, died Friday morning (Sept. 10, 1999). She was born June 9, 1950, at Halstead, to Samuel H. and Hazel (Rimbey) CROZIER. She grew up in the Mount Hope area and attended school there. She graduated from Burrton High School in 1968. She married Keith B. Kincaid on Dec. 5, 1969, at Mount Hope. For their entire married life, the couple lived on the Kincaid family farm north of Haven. Mrs. Kincaid retired after 27 years from her job with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1996. She had been a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, rural Burton. Survivors include her husband, Keith, a son, Shawn, at home; two brothers, Samuel Crozier of Bentley, and James Crosier of Aumsville, Ore.; two sisters, Marilyn WULF of Coffeyville and Vicki LUNDSTEDT of Grand Praire, Texas. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Grove Methodist Church, rural Burrton. Burial will be in the Valley Township Cemetery. Van Campen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.     3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Sunday September 12, 1999 Richard Murphy. Richard D. MURPHY, 84, of Nowata, died early Thurday morning (Sept. 9, 1999) at Claremore Regional Hospital. Mr Murphy was born Feb. 26, 1915, near Lenapah, to Will and Margaret (Coppie) Murphy. He grew up in Nowata and went to school there, attending Coody's Bluff School. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, and was discharged in 1945. He married Roberta Irene ROBERSON, on Feb, 9, 1946, at Independence. The couple made their hme in Nowata for most of their married lives. Mrs. Murphy preceded her husband in death on March 20, 1996. Mr. Murphy worked in construction for most of his life, and retired in 1977. Survivors include three sons, "Danny" of Universal City, Texas, Dennis of Moore, Okla., and Derek of Bartlesville; one sister, Roberta BARNES of California; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta, one brothers and three sisters. Services for Mr. Murphy will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Stumpff-Nowata Funeral Home.     3. The Coffeyville Journal Montgomery County Thursday September 9, 1999 Perry Miller. Perry W. MILLER, 50, of Chanute, died Tuesday evening, (Sept. 7, 1999) of an apparent lightning strike near Toronto Lake. Mr. Miller was born March 16, 1949, at Parsons, to James Edward and Norma Lorrayne (Kolb) Miller. He grew up in Humboldt, and graduated from high school there. He served four years in the U.S. Navy. Later, he was employed for several years by Daniel's Construction Co. He was involved in the construction of the Wolf Creek Facility, Burlington. Mr. Miller worked for the City of Chanute water department, where he was employed for 18 years. Survivors include his parents, James and Norma Miller of rural Cherryvale. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Potts Chapel, Cherryvale. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, also of Cherryvale. Friends may call at the chapel from 3 until 8 p.m. Friday, and after 9 a.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Friday.
