McCracken Darrow Mrs. Mary Elizabeth McCracken Darrow was born June 28, 1851, at Monmouth, Ill. And passed away March 27, 1935, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elmer Grecian, of Beloit, Kans. Her age at the time of her death was 83 years, 8 months, and 29 days. Mrs. Darrow came to Kansas with her parents in 1870, and settled in Jewell county on what was known as the McCracken ranch. On October 29, 1871, she was united in marriage to Russel Darrow, of Asherville, Kansas, by Julius Elliot of Beloit, Kans. To this union there were born eight children, five daughters and three sons, Mrs. Flora M. Bundy of Asherville, Mrs. Julianna Bowen of Willard, Kans.; Mrs. Sarah H. Weaver of Simpson; Mrs. Rosanna B. Carter of Simpson; Mrs. Frances M. Grecian of Beloit. She was preceded in death by her husband and the three sons, James Joy, Myron Jay and Perry Russell. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. M. A. Hamilton and Belle McCracken of Jewell county, Kans. And one brother, Perry McCracken of Jewell, Kans. She was a member of the Asherville Baptist church, and of the Asherville Rebekah Lodge, No. 674. When first married, Mr. and Mrs. Darrow moved to their homestead new Asherville, where their children were born, reared and educated. At a ripe age they retired from their farm, and moved to their comfortable home in Asherville, where Mr. Darrow passed away, and Mrs. Darrow has resided three since, only visiting with her daughters, and returning home when she desired. She seemed to enjoy life very much and was much interested in what was going on in the community. She will be greatly missed in the community, in the church, in the lodge and in the little city where she has lived so long. Mrs. Darrow was a pioneer in this part of Kansas, and shared the privations and disappointments of the first settlers of western Kansas. She wrote a history of the experiences of the early settlers of her community, with Indians, grasshoppers, droughts and failures and was a living demonstration of the regard of courage and labor. The community joins in expressing sympathy to these daughters in their bereavement, and to the grandchildren, and great grand children, to the church to which she belonged, and to the Rebekah lodge who will miss this faithful member in her regular attendance to their meetings. All these have lost a faithful members, and true sympathizing helper. And may the faithful hand of her trusted God lead you all into peace. A brief service was held at the Grecian home in Beloit at 2 p.m. Sunday, and the funeral service was held at the Asherville Baptist church at 3 p.m. conducted by Rev. William Little, pastor of the Baptist church at Beloit, and interment at the Glasco cemetery. There to await the resurrection, when Jesus will come to claim his own.
