Ks Obituaries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ks/MitchellObits?read=10 Surname: Sherwin, Adams, Dodge, Owen, Eaton ------------------------- DEATHS--SHERWIN The death of Comrade L.C.Sherwin at his home on North Chestnut Street in Beloit was truly a great shock to his family and his many friends in and around Beloit. He died at 5 o'clock Friday afternoon, March 1, 1935, death occurring suddenly from heart trouble while sitting in a chair. He had not been ill. Lewis Chamberlain Sherwin was born October 8, 1845 at Montreal, Canada, being aged at the time of his death last Friday 89 years, 4 months and 13 days. During the Civil War, he served in Co. E, 7th Iowa Vol. Cavalry. Following the war, he was married Sept. 27, 1867, at Bradford, Iowa to Margaret Adams. They came to Kansas in 1870, and the following year located in Beloit. Following the death of his wife, Mr. Sherwin married Mae Dodge of Beloit, who survives. He also leaves one daughter, Mrs. Jennie Owen; also one sister and one brother, Mrs. Lucy Eaton of Stoneham, Colorado and Anson Sherwin of Tulare, Calif. He also leaves seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Sherwin has for years been a valued member of the G.A.R. Post in Beloit, and has taken part in practically every patriotic event held in Beloit during the past fifty years. He was a mighty fine old gentleman and was held in the highest esteem by the people of this community. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. R.R. Plott at the McDonald Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial was in Elmwood cemetery. THE BELOIT GAZETTE Thursday, 7 March 1935 VOL. 63 No. 52

Deceased was born in 1813, at Stanstead, P.Q., and resided there until about 1855, when they removed to Iowa, and from Iowa to Kansas about six years ago. She was converted and baptized in her youth, and has always been a true christian, loved by all who knew her. She was married 58 years, and left a husband, Norman Sherwin, and eight children--Chamblin, Dennis, Anson and Byron and Mrs. Emily Cotton, in Plum Creek township; Mrs. Whitaker, at Wheatland, Dakota; Charles, in Colorado, and Mrs. Eaton, in Osage, Iowa, besides a large circle of friends, to mourn her loss. The funeral services were held at the family residence, conducted by Rev. J. L. King. The singing was conducted by Messrs. Hicks and Watts and Misses Hicks and Blanch Williams, of Beloit. The remains were followed to Elmwood cemetery, at Beloit, by a large concourse of neighbors and friends. CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank our friends for their sympathy and assistance during the sickness and death of our wife and mother; and, especial thanks are due the choir who rendered such beautiful music. Several of my ancestors are buried in the Beloit area of Mitchell Co. and could anyone tell me if there are Cemetery Books for sale? Since I live in California and can't go in person, can someone tell me if there is a local Genealogical Society that covers Beloit? I'm needing obits. and birth and death certs. from 1935 on back to 1884. Any help and info is greatly appreciated! Karla

Ks Obituaries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ks/MitchellObits?read=5 Surname: SHERWIN, ATKINSON, HOUSEL ------------------------- OBITUARY Norman SHERWIN was born in Stanstead, Canada East, on the 2d day of October, 1807, and died September 15, 1897, at the residence of his son. He lived with his son, seven miles north of Beloit. He was a man of great longevity, careful and regular in his habits, he lived his full time. His father died when Norman was only ten years old. At 26 years of age Mr. Sherwin married Caroline ATKINSON, and together they lived 56 years. His wife passed on before eight years ago. Mr. Sherwin lived in his native town in Canada until he was 45. He then settled in Bremer County, Iowa. Fourteen years ago he came to Kansas. A short time after his marriage he and his wife experienced religion. For many years they were working christians in the church. They sang in the choir from youth up to their settlement in Iowa. He often said to his family in later years, "I never missed a Sabbath when at home." He was a good Bible student. He read the bible through many times. Father Sherwin was a loving father, a good husband and an upright man. He was a very agreeable, affable, old-man. His family and friends will cherish his memory. On the 16th Rev. L.O. Housel conducted the funeral services at the house. The burial was in Elmwood cemetery. Source: Beloit Daily Call, 30 September 1897

    3. Hello, Esther Zimmerman SEIDEL once -and only once- told me that she had heard about a lynching in Mitchell county. My hazy memory tells me that a horse was stolen and when the culprit was found, he was hanged. I do not think there was an arrest or a trial.... This may have happened more often that we know. I am trying to find information on the Jacob McKee family that lived in Mitchell Co in the 1860-1900 time frame. Another McKee searcher said the Museum has a file on this family . The youngest son, Anthony, was killed while robbing a bank . . . .guess you could say he died as a result of a "job related accident"! I'd like to know more about this incident. Thanks in advance. Would someone please look to see if he has a death certificate on file in the county courthouse. I would gladly pay $10 for a copy, and it does not have to be official.
