    1. [KSMitchell] William Hamilton, b. Mar 1834 PA
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: HAMILTON, JESTER, SHREVES, SHRIEVES, BURGER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Cm.2ADI/154 Message Board Post: Rachel Hamilton Jester Shrieves/Shreves applied for a widow's pension in Blue Hill, Mitchell Co., KS around 1890. A Wm. Hamilton signed the application. Rachel lived in Holt Co., MO until the death of her 2nd husband, Napoleon Bonaparte Shrieves or Shreves. She unexpectedly turns up next in Mitchell Co., KS where a man with the same last name as her maiden name was also born in PA, had an Irish father and even resided in WV. Is there anywhere I can find out more about Wm Hamilton? His children, Henry, William S. (md. Emma Burger), Archie, and Adda also resided in the area in the 1900 census. Is there a death index for the early 1900's that I can check for Rachel? Her widow's application was not completed and she doens't seem to be anywhere in the 1900 censuses. Thanks--Susan

    1. [KSMitchell] 1875 census look up for Mitchel County KS
    2. Karren Amaro
    3. Hi, This is my first time posting to the Mitchel County list. I'm researching an orphan and could really use a look up. Her name was Martha (Mattie) Ellen Leeky/Lekey/Leaky/Leakey (She didn't read or write so the spelling depended on the census taker) She was most likely a domestic servant of some kind. Since she didn't read or write, so her age varies on documents but would most likely have been listed at 15-25 yrs old. She married Marcelles B. Botkin at Cawker City in 1879 - marriage performed by Rev. E. R. Brown. The head of the household she lived in before coming to KS died in 1875, so we think she may have gone to Mitchel County at that time. Don't have access to the Kansas State Census so sure would appreciate the help. Many thanks, Karren A.

    1. [KSMitchell] Civil War
    2. RN
    3. Are there any Civil War histories regarding families that were escorted to Mitchell Co., KS for their protection, and what became of them. I'm looking for the family of Daniel Myers from Crawford Co., ARK. They were for the Union, and the local people of Crawford Co. killed one son, maybe others, and the rest escaped to KS with the Union. One son, Henry, returned to Crawford, and later moved to Madison County. The rest I have lost. RN ancestorhunt@sbcglobal.net

William had a sister - Julia Butler Van Pelt who married a Gearhart. Thanks in advance, Dave Piper

    1. [KSMitchell] Julia Ann and Frederick VanVleit
    2. Gloria Schurman
    3. Julia and Frederick VanVleit are listed in the 1880 census as residing at Turtle Creek, Mitchell County, Kansas. Julia Ann was 1st married to Francis Everett - who died in the Civil War. Both Julia Ann and her first husband were from Maine, and moved to Wisconsin in the 1850's. After the death of Francis, Julia Ann moved to Iowa (where other family members lived) and married Frederick. From Iowa they moved to Kansas. I would like any information that anyone might have regarding their life in Kansas. Did Julie Ann and Frederick VanVleit live there until they died? Are there cemetery records available for Turtle Creek. Any help is deeply appreciated. Gloria
