Hello listers - just looking for the origin of the name Axtell. I have Axtell ancestors from Wisconsin and was wondering if any of them got to Kansas. Does anyone know who established the town? Thanks, in advance. B. Billington, RAOGK Volunteer Coos Co., OR
According to Cutlers History of Kansas (see http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/marshall/marshall-co-p13.html#AXTELL ) the town site was surveyed in January 1872 by the St. Joseph Town Company. Doesn't say where they were from, but further down in the write-up it mentions the families of J. Axtell and A. E. Axtell, from Deep River IA as arriving in 1880. I'll keep looking for more information. You can also write to the Marshall Co. Historical Society at mchs@mvleadvocate.com to see if they have more information.
