    1. Tornado in Frankfort, KS, Early 1870s
    2. Jerry I. Rupke
    3. Looking for information on a family legend that I am trying to validate. According to this family tradition, my 2nd great-grandfather Samuel G. Pillsbury moved his family to Frankfort, KS, from Massachusetts, in 1872, where some of his relatives lived. Sometime, shortly after moving to Frankfort, a tornado hit the area, killing two of Samuel's relatives (I don't know the names of the relatives killed) and nearly ripping all the clothers off of Samuel. As the story goes, Samuel was so traumatized by this event that he picked up his family and moved them to Phillips County, KS. Does anyone know how I would go about finding out more info and when this event occurred? My best guess is that it had to have happened sometime between 1872 and 1874, most likely in 1873, possibly even latter part of 1872. I have checked the Kansas Historical Society website for newspaper microfilm of Frankfort, but there is none listed for that timeframe. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I might be able to trace down more info on this? Would there have been newspapers of any other nearby towns that I should be checking? Jerry I. Rupke Ephrata, WA

I've got a divided back postcard entitled "Taking a Day Off in Axtell Kansas." which I acquired on eBay recently. It shows a young lady of perhaps 12 years with puffed sleeve dress and large bow back of head (c. 1910?) a la the outfits in the video "Anne of Green Gables." She is standing on a porch tearing off a day on a calendar. The postcard was not mailed but has on the back in what looks like child's hand, "From Verah" and "Lista Walter" on the address side. Under Verah is written in adult hand "Livingston." As the card is not dated and there is no address, it does not reach the dignity of informal census achieved by a postmarked and addressed card, but---I sure hate to waste the names. Please let me know if you've got a suggestion. By the way, the reason I got the card is that my paternal grandmother Gertrude Edna Bailey (called Edna), b. near Baileyville 19 Nov 1886, was attended to by Dr. Wachter who lived in Axtell. I've got a photo of the Dr., his house and I think a wife (there were two?). Dr. Wachter took Edna shortly after birth to raise (the why of that is another story). Edna was the Dr's ward for about 12 years. When the Dr. either m. or re m., Edna allegedly left because she did not care for the new woman of the house. Edna was a handsome girl who I believe liked to be the center of attention. Let me know if there is any interest in the Dr. Wachter photos and I will have film copies made at no charge to genealogists or historians. Regards, Richard Allen "Dick" Couch Sault Ste. 1. Re: 1860 or 1870 MARSHALL Co. Census Lookup Please
    2. You guys are awesome! Thanks for getting back to me with an answer so fast! I have known that Mary Bradford who was born about 1845 was from MA with father from ENG and mother born in SCOT from the 1880 Census for some time, but never could find Mary's parents since I believed they were probably still in OH or MA. Mary's husband was from OH and I thought they probably married back east and came to KS as husband and wife, but evidently they each came as children with their families. I just found George through looking on the 1880 searchable census on familysearch.org and thought I'd try searching KS in 1880 for any Bradford (I didn't know his first name) that was of the right age and born in England. Believe it or not, only ONE Bradford came up AT ALL in KS in 1880 that was born in England, and it was George, and he happened to be the right age to be her father AND Mary and her husband have a son named George, so I had a feeling I was on to the right family. But by 1880, George is a widower and living alone, so I had no way of knowing if he had Mary as a daughter without the 1870 and/or 1860 censuses!!! THANK YOU! You have just found the parents for me AS WELL AS siblings, which I knew nothing about! Mary Bradford married William Hamilton Auld (originally from OH) and they had many children including my husbands g-grandfather John Frederick Auld, who married Jennie Rebecca Hays in Marshall Co. and had Mark Hamilton Auld (my husband's grandfather) who married an Elsie Fenton in Marshall Co. She and her baby died in childbirth at age 19 with their first child and he buried her there and came to Kansas City and went to dental school and married a woman from Missouri with whom he had all his offspring and that was the end of our line of Auld's in Marshall Co. Anyway, thanks for opening this door for me. Valerie

    3. I read George Bradford's age as 56 in the 1860 census, and age 70 in 1870. I've transcribed the 1870 Marshall Co. census for one of the USGenWeb census projects, and wrote down "Grimes," Hezekiah (with a "?" after the "Grimes") because I couldn't tell what it said either. This census taker's handwriting was pretty "flowery." I double-checked it on the Ancestry site too, as well as what I transcribed. Too bad they didn't make the census enumerators take a penmanship test before they were hired <g> Alice Allen US GenWeb County Coordinator for Marshall Co., KS http://skyways.lib.ks.us/kansas/genweb/marshall/ Listmom for KSMARSHA-L *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 1/25/2003 at 9:50 AM mywebtree@yahoo.com wrote: >--- VHAuld@aol.com wrote: >> I am looking for GEORGE BRADFORD born in 1800 and >> wondered if anyone has >> access to the 1860 Census--- > >1860 Vermillian Twnship, Marshall, KS >(pg31/32 of 62 on a.com) >Post Office: Barretts Mills >George Bradford 36 Farmer England >Ellen 44 Scotland >John 20 Frm lbr Virginia >Sarah 18 Domestic "" >Ann 16 "" >Mary 14 "" >James 12 "" >George 10 "" >William 8 "" >Joseph 7 "" >Marth (Martha?) 6 (female) "" >Joseph Graham 22 Farm Labor Virginia >----------------------------------------- >1870 Vermillion Twnship, Marshall, KS >Post office: Barrett, KS pg 346 of census >(page 105/180 on a.com) >Bradford, George 36 Farmer England >Joseph 16 wks on farm Virginia >Arthen? 1. 1860 or 1870 MARSHALL Co. Census Lookup Please
    2. I am looking for GEORGE BRADFORD born in 1800 and wondered if anyone has access to the 1860 Census---I found him in an index for Marshall Co., Vermillion Twp, Dwelling #269. If anyone has access could you give me the detail on that please? He was born in England in 1800 and should have a daughter named Mary born in about 1845. Also I wonder if he is in the 1870 census in Marshall Co.? I have not had access to an index for that time period, but I would bet he is ther because I did find him in 1880 in Center, Marshall Co, KS at age 80 living alone, apparently a widower. If anyone has access to this, I'd appreciate this info also. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Valerie in Kansas City

    3. Obituary; Hanover Democrat, March 30, 1917 A large concourse of people attended the funeral of Mrs. Maria Boettcher (nee Weselah) on Monday, March 26th. Deceased was born at Linden, Hanoverland, Germany, Jan 14, 1833; was married to Christoph Boettcher in 1856.
