Ottawa County is south and west of Marshall County. I'd love to have a copy of that also, if you can send it as an attachment. Thank you for your kindnesses on the mail list. It just keeps amazing me how great those who work on genealogy are. Denise A Member of IBSSG "We do not stop playing because we are old....We grow old because we stop playing"
I am tracing any information I can obtain on the following family. All I know is that they appear in the 1870 and 1880 Federal Population Schedule located in Marysville, Marshall Co. I believe them to be my grandfather's family. They are: Hickman Pendleton (H.P.) Wells b. ca. 1827-1832 MS (was a Probate Judge from 1877-1882) Wife: Martha Ann Wells, b. 11 March 1841 MO Children: Pendleton, b. ca. 1861 MO Lucy, b. ca. 1863 MO Josephina, b. ca. 1865 KS Alles, b. ca. 1869 KS Thomas, b. ca. 1870 KS Nettey, b. ca. 1875 KS I believe that Thomas is John Thomas who moved to Chicago and married and lived there. I believe he may be buried in Chicago. The rest of the family, I don't know what happened to any of them. I do not know if they girls married, or who they married. I also do not know if Pendleton married. It is possible that Martha Ann remarried. I have some rather vague information that she may have marred a Carl Schuiler Ige after H.P. died, but do not know for sure. I am seeking help with marriages, deaths, places of burial, etc. Does anyone have any information on these folks? Thank you so much. Lynn..... Thanks for that great information. Do you know how old the courthouse is? Has it been there since 1880? I recently found out that the man who I think may be my great grandfather, Hickman Pendleton Wells, was a probate judge in 1880. That could then be the courthouse that he performed duties in. Is there a picture online that anyone knows about? Barbara F. replied to an email that I sent to her a couple of weeks ago and said that she is going to look for information on him. I would think if he was a probate judge and lived in Marysville, KS, there should be some information on him somewhere. I am awaiting a reply from Barbara and looking excitedly forward. I did ask if there was a charge for her checking on this for me, but she did not reply to that question. Do you know what the typical charge is from her society? Thanks again for your posting. Denise/Florida
Hello list, I just returned from a genealogy trip to Marysville, KS. I can't give enough praise to Barb F. who works at the society and also to Lloyd. These two people are wonderful help and if you are lucky enough to have ancestors in this county, you can be assured that you will surely get your money's worth of information from this society. If there is information to be found, Barb will find it! She's truly amazing! The old courthouse is absolutely beautiful and I encourage all who can go there to see it to do so! This is where the historical society is located. If anyone has questions about visiting, contact me, and I'll be glad to tell you what I know. We stayed at a Best Western in Marysville and the rooms were very nice and clean. The help was wonderful and when they knew what I was in town looking for, they gave me contacts to call. In fact, everyone in the town of Marysville were extremely friendly and very helpful! We would gladly go back there just to visit! Lynn/Florida
In reply to your questions about the Wells family in Marshall County, Kansas: There are two books I know about -- "History of Marshall County" by Emma Forter in 1917. and "Portrait and Biographical Album" written in 1889. Have you contacted the Marshall County Historical Society in the Historical Courthouse? They have a web site you can find on "Google." Their e-mail is mchs@mvleadvocate.com. Another wonderful source of information will be Mrs. Oretha Ruetti. She lived in Well Township for many years. She is the author of "It Happened Here," a weekly column since 1979 about anything and everything in Marshall County. A large number of her articles have been compiled into a book with same title. There are some Wells folk mentioned in the book. May this be helpful to you in your research. A Kansas Kid transplanted to Chgo.

Does anyone have or know where I can find any information on Hickam or Hicksam P. Wells who was a probate judge in Marshall County in 1880? Does anyone have access to a book on Marshall County history? That would probably be the best place to locate any possible information on this man. Thanks to two wonderful lookup researchers and help in locating my John Thomas Wells b. 1870 in Marysville, KS, I have the 1870 and 1880 census information which very well could be my grandfather. Listed as Thomas Wells in the 1870 and 1880 census in Marysville, I believe this is my grandfather. If that be proven, then Thomas Wells father is listed as Hickam P. Wells in the 1880 census and listed as a probate judge. Can anyone help? Thank you so much. Denise
I'm seeking any information about John Thomas Wells, possibly born in Marysville, Kansas about 1870. I just learned of the potential location of his birth and would love to hear from anyone on the list researching Wells in Marshall County. Thank you very much. Dear Dorothy, I have no idea what kind of work you do to have a valuable find like that on your desk but I just can't thank you enough! I've been working on this family for five years with barely any success. I certainly will write to Nicole - we share grandparents, although she may not know it! Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart! Lynn

Lynn, I had a stack of papers on my desk to file. Picked one up from a Nicole Kasper telling about her Manley line. "Thomas E. Manley and Bertha Albertina Zimmermann married Jan 1, 1900. at 12:30 a.m. in Liberty, Nebraska Bertha Albertina Zimmermann both on Ocrtober 11, 1878 in Marysville, Kansas." If you're interested --- she listed children of Thomas and Bertha 1. Myrtle Alberta Manley b Feb 6, 191932 2. Charles Arnold Manley b Jan 4, 1924 She also sd. " Alberta Manley mar Ted Corbet Mathews on November 5, 1939 in Fairbanks, alaska. Charles Manley mar Edna Mae Claibourn on May 15, 1943 in Oroville, Washington. According to Cutlers History of Kansas (see http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/marshall/marshall-co-p13.html#AXTELL ) the town site was surveyed in January 1872 by the St. Joseph Town Company. Doesn't say where they were from, but further down in the write-up it mentions the families of J. Axtell and A. E. Axtell, from Deep River IA as arriving in 1880. I'll keep looking for more information. You can also write to the Marshall Co. Historical Society at mchs@mvleadvocate.com to see if they have more information.
