It could be important but I've seen several instances where there were mistakes in the censuses. So just havng a different middle initial could mean nothing (and you have the right family esp. if everything else matches). Just remember that census data is good but it's not perfect nor does it really "prove" anything.
Wayne, yes the initial "P" is important, but did you notice that the Vermillion KS household includes that Henry's FATHER, and his name is BENJAMIN. Wayne Smith <chessman52@hotmail.com> wrote:But being the middle initial different throws it all out the window and back to square 1. ========================== Mary Thiele Fobian Genealogical & Historical Research Pacific Grove, California
Hi Again Mary Well that beats all- Went to LDS earlier- searched Henrys son Paul. Names were all different. but all the dates matched mine to months Henry there was Henry Lewis born 55/ but said Bloomington IL the Mary was not Mary E.Kious but a Mary Ann NYFELER her dates match the dates of my 1900 census also. Paul was Paul Ariel Smith. correct birth date to mine. But being the middle initial different throws it all out the window and back to square 1. Would that be your take. Its bad enough to have to search smiths but then errored entries.humm I will keep your kind efforts. All kinds of cogs in the works- got probate of gg grandfather listed as heir is someone not listed with household any years. Mainhope is to find descendant that might know whom gg grandfathers siblings and parents were. Wayne, There is a problem with the data you were given--it is incomplete and doesn't reveal an important fact that indicates that this Henry SMITH is **not** the son of John GH Smith! Unfortunately, some numbers have been written over the top of the area where Henry's initial appears, but I'm fairly certain that it's "P" rather than "H." Here's what's actually in the 1900 census: 1900 US Census, KS, Marshall Co., Vermillion Township, Sheet 20B SMITH, Henry [P?], head, Dec 1855, 44, married 16 years, IL IN --Mary, wife Apr 1858, 42, married 16 years, bore 7 children/5 living, OH SWITZ --Elda, daughter, Jan 1885, 15, KS --Paul, son, Feb 1887, 13, KS --Barbara, daughter, Dec 1892, 7, KS --Lawrence, son, [June?] 1895, 4, KS --Iva, daughter, Mar 1898, 2, KS --Benjamin [W?], Father, Dec 1819, 80, widowed, IN IN Wayne Smith <chessman52@hotmail.com> wrote: Godd Morning Mary Thiele Fobian Thankyou for your reply. Looking for Lane's Crossing cemetery in Lanesburg, KS. John Lane 1870s operated a ferry crossing at Bib Blue Section 26 Blue Rapis City Twp. Searching for the old burial records for the cemetery... understand the headstones were plowed up and sold. Hoping to find an ancestor (Ezra Sabin died 1874) who was friends with a Lane family. The original Sabin homestead was less than a mile or two from the cemetery location. Any information appreciated... thank you. Valerie and list, You really lucked out reaching Lloyd for help. When my hubby and I visited Marshall County, he helped us find my great grandfather's grave. He actually got in our car and went with us to ensure us finding the cemetery. He was so much help, we took him to lunch and I've got a picture of him at the restaurant. Good luck in your search and for the list, you are lucky if you have ancestors in this county as the available help is incredible! Lynn
Lloyd at the Marshall County Historical Society has been MOST helpful. I called him and he spent over an hour looking things up for me while I talked to him on the phone! He lives in Marysville and was raised in Frankfort and really knows the area, the old cemeteries and even warned me about where the roads are bad or might flood. He looked up some plat maps for me and then gave me explicit directions and I now know where I am going. He is also sending me an obit from the Frankfort newspaper from 1888! I will be sending a donation and look forward to seeing all these places this weekend thanks to Lloyd! In Marysville go to the Historical Museum next door east of records and deeds and they will xrox a copy. I got one and it shows Lillis and 3 or 4 miles north is an Auld farmstead with a large stone marker pointing across the road to the former Auld PO location which has been crossed by a newer road. Valarie- I have some maps I can send that might help. One shows all the townships with a section grid (36 to a township) and county place names. I have a plat map of the area around Blue Rapids. It is dated 1904. I think it is from a series done of the entire county in 1904. They show property boundaries, number of acres, owners name, transportation, rivers/creeks, schools, etc. Excellent documents. Not sure where I got mine. I think National Archives in D.C. But local archives may have them also. Also, try Marshall Co. Chancery Clerks office. If you like I'll email you what I have. Thanks to everyone who responded regarding Old Plat Maps and Cemeteries. I have e-mailed the Marshall Co. Hist Society and hope to hear back from them before I leave on Saturday since they won't be open on Saturday. DARN! I found the Cutler's History of KS available onlin and it is great! Not only histories for every county but maps of townships, etc! http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/ Go down and click on the county you are interested in or click on Territorial History!! Valerie
Valerie, Go to the old courthouse in Marysville. There is a lady there that is so helpful. She should be able to find plat maps and direct you to the cemeteries. My husband and I drove from Florida to do some research there two years ago. We found tons of information thanks to all the helpful people there. Good luck in your research and with your trip. Lynn
Write to the Marshall Co. Historical Society at mchs@bluevalley.net and ask them to check their cemetery card file. They are closed on Saturdays, but hopefully you'll get the information you need before you leave. There is one "Auld" (Ida L.) listed on the cemetery listing for Vermillion Cemetery. The other ones which are online (Home City, Marysville, North Elm, and Wells) show no listings for Auld or Bradford.
