    3. The LaCygne Weekly Journal Linn County Friday May 20, 1898 From The Flying Squadron. Mrs. Dellinger, of LaCygne, Receives a Letter From Her Cousin. A few years ago, William P. WHITE, a cousin of Mrs. M.G. DELLINGER, of this place, went into the navy. Since that time he has kept his friends here posted as to where he was. The following letter is from the United States Ship, Minneapolis, which he is now on: Hampton Roads, May 12, 1898. It is a long time since I heard from Kansas, and the changes with you are as marked with you as they have been with me. I am so tied down to the sea that if I got in shore again as far as Kansas I should lose my bearings in life completely and would not know how to work back to the water again. I have seen several wars in others parts of the earth but I did not expect to participate in one, and though we have been as yet a long distance form the scene of action, any day may send us to Cuba, and the ugly realities of war. For war is no holiday affair, a few may gain honor and fame but to the many there is only hard work, disease and death. The newspapers will tell you all about it in most glittering and alluring adjectives, but the facts are quite otherwise, and would not make pleasant reading. I am generally prety tired when the time for "turning in" comes along. You will hear of us in the papers, for we belong to Com. Schley's Flying Squadron although we some how don't fly either very fast or very far, but have been waiting for orders to move at any minute and so am constantly casting ship. With kind regards, I am sincerely yours, Wm. P. White.
