    3. The LaCygne Weekly Journal Linn County Friday May 20, 1898 Letter From Corporal Hoover. The following letter was received from Corporal Hoover of the Twentieth Kansas who this week left for Manila: Camp Leedy, May 12, 1898 Dear Sir: I will drop you a few lines to let you know that the boys are all in good cheer and in the best of spirits, and are very jubilant at the thought of being ordered to San Francisco, thence to the Philippines. We are awaiting orders to move at any hour. I wish to say to the people of Linn county that Co. K (which is our Co.) of the 20th regiment of Kansas, is the crack company in the regiment, and we get plenty of compliments on all sides, especially from the governor and his staff, on the day of the big parade given here in Topeka in honor of Admiral Dewey. Linn county boys are not slow after all. We also had presented to our boys a beautiful stand of colors by the ladies of Topeka and our company were the color-bearers. I also wish to state that none of the boys are sorry they enlisted in this struggle in the relief of suffering humanity and to avenge the lives of the marines who went down with the Maine. We are ever ready to bear the star and stripes to the front and plant t! hem on the enemy's soil, that all who look on them may be free and independent. Respectfully, A.M. Hoover.
