The LaCygne Weekly Journal Linn County January 6, 1899 Tuesday night, David JONES, who has resided east of LaCygne for many years, answered the death summons and passed to the great majority. He was rather a peculiar man, known far and wide as "Uncle Davy" JONES; he was benevolent, honest and kind, possessing that great trait of character of doing unto to others as he would be done by. The funeral of the deceased was held Thursday afternoon in the Christian church by Rev. B.J. BLANDING. Interment took place in the Oak Lawn cemetery. The death of David JONES makes three of the early settlers who have passed away within the last two weeks. One by one they must answer the Master's call, who doeth all things well.
The LaCygne Weekly Journal Linn County Friday January 6, 1899 For many months H.M. WOODRUFF of his place has been in failing health. His friends have been anxious about his physical condition for some time. Last Saturday evening the final came. He peacefully passed from this world to his eternal rest beyond the river. Henry M. WOODRUFF was born in Farmington, Connecticut, November 23, 1827, and died at his home in LaCygne, Kansas on December 31, 1898; age 71 years, 1 month, and 8 days. It was near the close of the last day of the glorious year of 1898 that the silver cord of life was severed. The beginning of the new year found LaCygne in sorrow for the departed one. The bells that chimed the incoming year were more of a death knell than of the joyous welcoming usually sounded. The deceased came to LaCygne in 1868 and has since made his home here. He had witnessed the growth of our prosperous little city from the time the first cabin was erected, and was always found assisting in the growth and development of his native town. He leaves two sons and two daughters by former marriages to share the sympathy of our people with the present Mrs. WOODRUFF. The funeral services were conducted at the residence Tuesday afternoon by Rev. E.J. NUGENT, pastor of the Presbyterian church at this place, after which the remains were conveyed to the Oak Lawn cemetery and tenderly laid to rest by the Masonic order of which the deceased had been a member for many years.

The LaCygne Weekly Journal Linn County Friday December 30, 1898 C.W. Olney. On Christmas morning at 3 o'clock the spirit of one of our time-honored citizens, C.W. OLNEY, took its flight to that great unknown world. He had been ailing for some time but it was hardly thought that he was dangerously ill. The deceased was born in Lockport, New York in 1818, hence he was over eighty years of age. He had tiwce been married. To this first union three sons were born, Frank A., of Denver, Harry(Barry?) C., of Boston and Chas E. of South Dakota, all of whom are living. In 1877 he married his present wife who still survives him. The funeral services were held at the residence on Wednesday morning conducted by Rev. E.J. NUGENT, after which the remains were followed to our beautiful Oak Lawn cemetery where they were laid to rest. The I.O.O.F. and Rebekah lodges joined the many friends paying the last respects. C.W. OLNEY was a pioneer settler here and the many friends he made in the early days have one by one preceded him until very few are left. He was a good man--one whom everybody respected, and our community will greatly feel his loss.
