    1. [KSLINCOL] new to the page
    2. Hello, everyone. I've just finished reading the Saline Valley Register from 1876 to 1879 and digging out what I could find. I've added a list of "obituaries" from that time period. (Be advised that I use the term losely; in most cases the deaths were mentioned in the columns along with personal items, and were either barely labeled as deaths or not labeled at all, so none of these will be very detailed. But we take what we can get.) This period includes the bad diphtheria outbreak of 1878 so there are a lot of children's deaths. Here is the URL of the list; as always, feel free to ask for any of these: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/obit1876-79.htm There is now some overlap in obituaries, as I had done some 1879 obits that Clarence Suelter was nice enough to send me. At some point the obits page will need an overhaul ... but I'm swamped with other things at the moment so it will just have to stay that way awhile. I found a mention in the Dec. 11, 1878, Saline Valley Register that I found interesting regarding the name of Lincoln: "The name of our post office has been changed from Lincoln Center to Lincoln, dropping the Center." So I guess we can pin a date on when that change was made. An account of the prairie fire that killed three people (Montgomery, Pfaff) in the Prairie Grove area in 1879. (We had an account of an "old-timer" remembering the event 50-some years later, but this is the story that ran in the Saline Valley Register at the time. Gayle, take note!) http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/fire1879b.htm An account of what seems to have been, perhaps, a sort of Carrie Nation incident in which a person or group busted up a druggist's store, apparently believing he was selling whisky: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/crime1876.htm An account of the murder of Michael Barrett by his nephew, Michael Haley: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/crime1876.htm I think that's it for now!
