Hi List: I am doing a one name study on the name COVEY. If anyone has run across any of these folks I would certainly appreciate hearing from you. My direct line goes back to 1639 in Braintree, Massachusettes. I'm now trying to fatten the tree and perhaps add a little color. Thanks in advance for your efforts. I don't know if there is anyone from the ZUROEVESTE family online or if anyone knows them, but thought I would pass this on. In the course of surfing for geneaology links related to my Lower Saxon German ancestory, I discovered a link maintained by the University of Oldenburg (Germany) with informtaion on Lower Saxon (Niedersachsen) emmigrants to the U.S. The page also has information about and letters authored by Johann Heinrich ZUR OEVESTE (1801-1878), an immigrant to America in the 1830s. Also stated in the site: "Die Kirchenbücher seiner Gemeinde in Indiana, heute "St. John's Ev. (Translation: " His [Johann Heinrich's] church records in what is today St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (White Creek, Indiana), were found, leading to courthouse and finally family records, including ones in Lincoln, Kansas, where the descendants of Johann Heinrich zur Oeveste moved in 1893.") The letters from Johann Heinrich ZUR OEVESTE written in America and sent to Germany are avialable from the website. The site also has a lot of other interesting information about emmigrants to the U.S. from Lower Saxony. You just never know where you will find a Lincoln County connection! Scott Holl
Hi, Lincoln listers! I was reading my weekly Sentinel-Republican, whose best feature often is "The Way it Was...", a collection of items from past issues. I had to pass these two on. Sept. 6, 1894 Lincoln County is full of people who would like to be worried by an income tax. Sept. 4, 1924 A flock of dragon flies said to be two miles wide flew over the city of Vesper at 7 o'clock Sunday evening. The flock, flying from the north to the south, took nearly half an hour to pass over the town. Those were the days... Tracee
Hello Lincoln County researchers.... First... we have some new queries I'm in the process of adding to the Lincoln County query page: I should have them out within the next couple hours. -----------Next: I have an idea. As I've said before this list is a genealogy list. We will not overburden it with messages about Rachel. Those of you who would like a periodic update on Rachel's condition can email me at our home email address which is: wrs@cjnetworks.com What I'll do is gather those email addresses together and make a group of them together and every once in a while I'll send out a message on Rachel. I already make up a message for the our family, friends and the people we work with... don't see them as much as we used to of late! Diana and I want the Lincoln County genealogy list to stay on track... Lincoln County genealogy... but we also are very appreciative of the messages we've gotten from all of you and your questions. If you're wanting to know how things are going just send a message to the above address and I'll add you to the list of recipients. We don't send out updates that much... maybe once a week so far... and as things go along, hopefully even less often as she improves. In the subject line of your message to us put the words, LINCOLN COUNTY LIST and we'll know to add your email address to our address book. I plan on sending out a message about Rachel tonight. Hello Lincoln County researchers... This is a genealogy list and the subject matter should be kept solely to that topic... but we've developed some good relationships with some of you and wanted to ask a favor. This afternoon we had a bombshell dropped into our lives. I took our 7 year old, Rachel, who had been feverish for some time, in for blood tests at the local lab here in Topeka. The results were a very low white cell count and extreme anemia. We rushed Rachel to a Kansas City hospital where she is tonight with Diana. Tomorrow they'll do a bone marrow test and determine if we're dealing with anemia or leukemia. All good thoughts/prayers would be greatly appreciated. I would ask that no one respond to this email list so as not to clutter it any more than I am doing right now. If you wish to write us with good wishes use our email address: wrs@cjnetworks.com. I apolgize for this message but I am a strong believer in the power of pray/positive thoughts. Hi to all. I am new to this list and am looking for info on the HOBB(S), BIRD, & COUSE families. My mother was Birdie Ruth HOBB from Lincoln, KS, and married Chris Veh from Russell Co, KS. The HOBB(S) family came to Lincoln from Clark Co, MO, and I have been trying to put people together from there also. My maternal grandmother was Myrtle Lillian (HOBB) BIRD, parents James Aaron BIRD & Alice Etta COUSE. There has been quite a little work done on the BIRD family but I have not been able to go any further than Alice's grandfather. Her father was Edgar Orson Couse married to Helen Samantha OLIVER, both from NY. Alice's grandparents were John C. COUSE, born and died in Broome Co, NY, and Lucinda ST. JOHN, born in CN or NY and died in Scammon, Cherokee Co, KS. I also have a photo from my mother's collection of a picnic at a Calvin COUSE ranch west of Lincoln. Is it possible that Calvin COUSE might be related to Alice??? There is also a Lucy COUSE that married Riley Sylvester BIRD, brother to James Aaron BIRD. Riley and Lucy BIRD lived at Scammon, KS, where Alice's mother died, so I wonder if Lucy and Alice might be sisters. If anyone has ANY kind of information on the COUSE (or HOBB(S) or BIRD) family, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it. David Veh d.veh@worldnet.att.net In Overland Park, KS
Hello Lincoln County researchers... After some problems with the sites for the 1885 census and the "Souvenir History" book Joan Stevenson has them both back online at two new URLs: 1885 census index of Lincoln County http://www.flash.net/~psdinc/Census/census_index.htm Souvenir History of Lincoln County (1906 edition) http://www.flash.net/~psdinc/History/Souvenir%20History.htm We've updated the links on the Lincoln County page. Joan has added another chapter to the book... this one on schools... with more great illustrations. I'm curious as to if the Lincoln County High School building pictured in the text is still around. Does anybody know? Also Joan asked a good question that one of you might be able to answer better than I. What were the normal school and normal institutes? I got my library degree at Emporia State University, which has gone through many name changes through the years. Back at the turn of the century I believe it was called the "Normal School." I'm guessing that normal schools were teachers' colleges as that's what the name changed to down the road. I don't know why they used the word, Normal in the name... maybe because the state was trying to "normalize" or standardize teacher training.... just a guess on my part. The Normal Institutes, I believe, were held in every county once a year? Instructors would show up and give on-site teacher training for rural teachers in the county. A lot of this is guess work on my part and if anybody knows more please fill us in. Hello Lincoln County folks.... We've gotten caught up with the Lincoln County queries and have them up online. Hew surnames included in the queries are: BARNHARDT BISHOP BROWN GEORGE HAYMAN HICKLE HINKLE MYERS STRANGE WALLACE You can find the new queries at the bottom of the query page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/queries.html or search the surname page for any of the names above which will take you directly to the query you are looking for: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/lincs.htm An addendum to the message we sent out last night concerning submitting family histories to the Lincoln County page. The "rules" said: --All generations listed must have some connection to Lincoln County, KS (lived, born, married, died there) --Not just names and dates and places. Family history is just that... history. Tell people some interesting facts or stories about your family. --Don't get too long winded.... no books. Take a look at the family pages up online (on skyways) so far and you'll get an idea of what we're talking about. Clarence Suelter (thanks Clarence) pointed out that I need to be clearer about the first point: --All generations listed must have some connection to Lincoln County, KS (lived or born or married or died there) The little word, "or", will hopefully make things easier to understand. As long as at least one person within a generation spent some time in Lincoln County we'll be happy to include that generation online. later Bill and Diana Sowers Bill and Diana Sowers - wrs@cjnetworks.com - 1746 Fairmont Rd, Topeka, KS 66604 check out our SCHREMMER-POLLOCK families page at: http://www.cjnetworks.com/~wrs/index.htm Lincoln County Kansas KSGenweb Project page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/index.html Gove County Kansas KSGenWeb Project page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/gove/index.html
I attended the Tiemann family reunion this past weekend in Lincoln. While I was there, I stopped in Village Lines, a gift shop in downtown Lincoln. The shop has a selection of books on Lincoln County, including A Souvenir History of Lincoln County, etc. The shop has a website with a partial listing of titles at www.shopper-showcase.com. follow the links to the list of businesses and click on the Village Lines link. The shop owner is Marilyn Helmer and the number is (785) 283-4787. The address is 139 W. Lincoln Ave., Lincoln, KS 67455. Besides the books, the shop also carries a variety of local craft and gift items, Kansas foods and cards. Happy shopping! Scott Holl
