Hi, list! Because several people mentioned an interest in the DILLON family, I thought I'd put this on the list as well as add it to the gleanings on the Lincoln page. Lincoln Sentinel-Republican -- Thursday, Aug. 31, 1939 The DILLON family reunion was celebrated in the spacious country home of Mr. and Mrs. L. DILLON at Vesper on Sunday, Aug. 27. The day was wonderfully cool and pleasant. Dinner was served cafeteria style to the 55 present. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Harley WHALEY, Ravenwood, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. Roy WHALEY, Mrs. Cora WHALEY, Elmo, Mo., Frank NEW Jr., Hopkins, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. Ed DILLON and daughter Waneta, Mrs. A.E. Hello Lincoln County Researchers I'm a little late with my surnames due to a new computer and all the set up and transfers that go with that. My Surnames in Lincoln County are: WOODY, CROWL and BOWLIN My great grandfather Henry Woody moved to Lincoln County sometime in the late 1890's from Georgia. I am thinking that he followed the trail to Kansas from some earlier Woody migrations. Josiah Askew Woody and his wife Rausey Melinda Bryan Woody came to Lincoln County in 1871. Anyway, back to my line, Henry WOODY married Edith CROWL and lived in or near Barnard. They had seven children, Wanda Wilma, Kathryn, Frank, Nellie Ellen (married Keith Fisher SAUNDERS) and my grandfather Alex Lenard WOODY. Alex WOODY born Feb. 15, 1908 in Barnard married Margaret Mary BOWLIN ( may have been married in Beloit, Mitchell County but not sure). Did anyone's family that lived near Barnard in the late 20's or early 30's go to Beloit to get married? My father Donald Mac WOODY was born in Barnard on Jan. 17, 1932 That's all I know for now other than the whole clan packed up and headed to Oregon in 1938/39. I am not sure why. Tracee, if you could look for a marriage record for Alex Woody and Margaret Bowlin I would appreciate it. Thanks, Mike Woody Albany, Oregon

Hello Tracee and other Lincoln County researchers... Just a note about the homestead records. I don't know if this is relevant but the initial applications were published in the newspaper... I've seen many of them as I look through for gleanings. Each application announced in the paper listed that it was filed in either one of two "land offices".... one in Salina and the other in Concordia. The notices in the paper include an application number, the location of the land, and the names of witnesses to the application. Would these land records be filed in Lincoln County or perhaps at the National Archives? I'm really not sure. I'd love to enter all of the homestead applications I find in the 1870's/80's papers I go through. The problem with them is that if I took the time/effort to type all of them up I'd have no time to put in other info that is included for the gleanings (e.g... marriages, deaths, births, arrivals, departures, etc.). If somebody would like to check out the Lincoln newspapers through Interlibrary loan from the Kansas State Historical Society (or if they live in Topeka or Lincoln and have the time to go to the State Historical Society or Lincoln Public Library) and go through them pulling out the land application notices in each issue and donate them to the website that would be great... a lot to ask but what the heck!... I figured I'd give it a try.<grin> Good luck in your research Bill Bill and Diana Sowers - wrs@cjnetworks.com- check out our SCHREMMER-POLLOCK families page at: http://www.cjnetworks.com/~wrs/index.htm Lincoln County Kansas KSGenweb Project page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/index.html Gove County Kansas KSGenWeb Project page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/gove/index.html Graham County Kansas KSGenWeb Project page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/graham/index.html Barton County Kansas ALHN web page at: http://www.geocities.com/irus86/
Hi once again! Just a note to say I will be going to Lincoln on May 24 for a two-week visit. This is my semi-annual offer to do lookups while I'm there. Here's what I will do: 1. Look up obituaries, provided I have a date of death (no searches for "sometime in 1910). 2. Look up marriages at the courthouse. I can send you dates (easier for me), or I can get copies of the marriage license. FYI: the licenses do NOT have the names of the bride and groom's parents, so there isn't any more real info there than the date anyway. The copies will cost 25 cents. (That's the courthouse's rate, not mine.) 3. Take photos of gravestones at St. Patrick's Cemetery, St. John's Catholic, Prairie Grove and Lincoln City Cemetery. I also am open to any suggestions for information I should try to bring back with me. Someone (Lori, perhaps?) suggested seeing if the courthouse has homestead records, someone else suggested voter registration cards. I'm going to check into both of those and just generally "poke around" and see what else might turn up. Any other ideas, let me know. Please send me your lookup request NO LATER THAN May 20. I make every effort to get everyone's lookups done but I have to add that I may not have time, depending on demand. (I also have to add that I've never failed to get them done yet, but my mom has a full slate of stuff planned for me.) That's it from me today, I promise. Tracee
Hi, list. Just added a new category to the Lincoln County page: a community history page. Here is the link: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/commun.htm So far, as you'll see, I only have Vesper up there, but I hope to keep adding to it. Anyone with info, please feel free to contribute! Anyone with family who settled in that area will want to read it, but names mentioned that I recall are TOOLE/O'TOOLE, FLAHERTY, STEELE, BLOCK, MIDDLEKAUF. Enjoy!
I guess perhaps I ought to take my own advice and send my names: Brockett, Brooks, Corrigan, Crowe, Kerr, King, Kyne, Lewick, Luff, Walls, Walters Whalen is also an interest of mine, as well as any of the Irish-Catholic families that farmed near Vesper: Powers, Dudley, Fox, Haley/Healy, etc. Several of you mentioned DILLON. Anyone related to the Irish-Catholic Dillons who lived west of Lincoln? Shot in the dark ... I know there were at least two Dillon families. Thanks to everyone who sent names to the list. That will help me when I'm going through records. I've made a list of everyone's interests and I can alert you personally if I come across something. Most of you are familiar to me through various lookups but if there's anyone out there who hasn't asked for cemetery or death register lookups for your surnames, please do. Tracee
