    1. [KSLINCOL] Springfield Iron Co.
    2. Hey, folks, here's a question for you. Have you ever heard of a Springfield Iron Company being in LINCOLN? I bought a rather odd stereoview on ebay. It is of what looks like the Springfield Iron Company Store, with what looks like a mill (a steel mill, not a roller mill) next to it. On the back is a stamp that says "N.B. Rees, Photographer, Lincoln Center, Kansas." I bought it based on the stamp, but I don't know if the actual picture was taken in Lincoln. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Do any of the Rees family connections out there have any ideas? Tracee

    2. Hello, folks. Just wanted to tell you all that I have put up a new page on the Lincoln page. It is a series of pieces the Lincoln Sentinel ran on Nov. 20, 1913, about Lincoln. There are a lot of names mentioned, and it paints a good -- if somewhat flowery -- picture of Lincoln in what was its boom time. Ks Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ks/Lincoln/17 Surname: Sellman, Schulte ------------------------- Is Salt Creek Township still in existence? I have found it on the Lincoln County 1885 Kansas State Census but cannot find it on a current AAA map. If still around, where is it? If not, was the name changed or did it just cease to exist. Also, where would I write for divorce records circa 1885-1900, but most likely the divorce occurred between 1885 & 1895. Thanks for any information.

    3. I would like to thank those of you who have sent me some very helpful information and links to help me get started. I have just sent off letters to the Social Security Administration for the following record: Keith White SSN 513-16-1528 Residence at time of death: Wichita, Sedgwick Co, KS 67212 born: 17 Feb 1925 died: 24 Apr 1993 Social Security number issued in Kansas before 1951 I believe it most closely matches the information I have. I have also written the MHGS for the 2 obituaries listed for him in 1993. Again I appreciate you ideas and anything else you might want to share. If anyone is interested in this line I can post the information when it comes. 3. Pam..... Woke up in the middle of the night and where do I go..... the computer!!!! Thought I'd post this response to the whole list just to let those of you who are unaware of the two great resources on the Internet mentioned below. Just out of curiosity I checked the Social Security Death Index at Ancestry.com and found the following: Keith White SSN 513-16-1528 Residence at time of death: Wichita, Sedgwick Co, KS 67212 born: 17 Feb 1925 died: 24 Apr 1993 Social Security number issued in Kansas before 1951 You can go to the site and search http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/ssdi/main.htm Put in the last name, White, first name, Keith and right underneath that put Kansas in the box that says "Issued by". Notice when you bring up Keith White off to the right hand side there is a link saying "Request Information." Click on this and you'll get detailed information on how to request this Keith White's original Social Security application. It should list all sorts of helpful info that might help determine if this is the correct Keith White. Also, the Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society, located in Wichita, has an extensive webpage at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/mhgs/ They have an online obituary index of the Wichita newspaper. I checked under 1993 at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/mhgs/93obits.htm and sure enough listed twice is: White Keith W.------------ 26 Apr 1993 White Keith W.----------- 28 Apr 1993 If you'll go to the top of the obituary page for the Society you'll see that you can request (via "snail mail") copies of these obits/death notices for just $3 each. The obits might be info enough for you to establish whether this is the right Keith White or not. Good luck with your research. 1. [KSLINCOL] Birth Register
    2. Well, folks, after a few days of doing lookups out of the Birth Register, I have to caution you that there seem to be a lot of holes. For instance, I just typed in a very common surname for a lookup (BOLTE), and the Boltes I grew up with and went to school with weren't there. There also are a lot of mispellings and typos, which I've noticed in the Death Register as well. I also know that before there was a Lincoln Hospital, people went to Ellsworth to have babies and I'm wondering if that is part of the problem. Anyway, I don't want to be discouraging because there are still 146 pages of birth records, which is better than what we had before -- ZERO -- but it is not as complete as I had hoped. Then again, what is? Tracee

(There are some mentions of diphtheria in this, which I know will interest Wilda.) http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/stories15.htm The second is a letter I copied from the Historical Society. It was written by John A. Watts, one of a small group of blacks who settled in Lincoln County. 1. [KSLINCOL] Big news: birth records
    2. Hello, folks! Thanks to Sandy Foulke, I will soon have something you'll all be interested in: birth records for Lincoln County! Although I had asked at the courthouse about these and was told they didn't exist, it turns out they were three blocks away at city hall! These records begin in 1886 and continue through the 1970s, according to the city clerk. They will not be complete; i.e., people turned the information in themselves and apparently there was no real obligation to do so. But still ... what a find. Thanks, Sandy, for the alert! The catch, and you won't believe it, is that they have no way of printing it out anymore, because the computer program is no longer available, and they only have ONE COPY. So I have to find someone who will go in and put the book on a copier and flip it over and over for a few hours to get a copy. But if I find someone, they will let me have the copy. So I'm working on that and when I get it, I'll let you all know! Tracee

The stats listed the top 50 pages visited at KSGenWeb for a six month period. Most of the top 50 visited pages were "statewide" sites but there were some individual county pages listed as well. Overall the main page for Lincoln County ranked 21st of all KSGenWeb pages visited. Of the individual counties within the list "little" Lincoln ranked 8th!.... behind the bigger counties...
