I got inspired and put a bunch of new pictures up on http://www.geocities.com/rlsteven_2000/ , our Lincoln County Photo Album. I received another group from Lori Graff that are wonderful. I also took the time to scan all those ad pages from the "Souvenir History" that I had been meaning to do for ages. These last pages take some time to load so be patient as I think you will enjoy what's there. More, more, more - I know there are many interesting pics out there just screaming to be in our album. Please let me know if you have any problems with the site and thanks to my wonderful (and brilliant) daughter who is the one that actually puts everything up on the web. Joan
Hi, folks. I have finished indexing the 1986 obituaries and because there are so many names, I didn't want to send them all on an e-mail, so check out this URL: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/obit1986.htm Warning: if the page says "incomplete" at the top, try again later. The HTML program was really dragging this morning and it might take awhile for the changes to show up. Let me know if you'd like full obits on anyone! Tracee
Hi everyone - there is a new photo on page 6 of our site. The url for the site is http://www.geocities.com/rlsteven_2000/ and the picture is at the bottom of the page. Thanks to Lori Graff for contributing and we need more so check out those dusty boxes to see what you can find. I can use a good photo copy and I will do all the scanning. Maybe one of you that lives nearby Lincoln County could even take some current pictures to submit. Joan
Hi Everyone, I finally have located my ancestors in the Pleasant twp., Lincoln Co., KS 1880 census. The family of Merrit Smith/Merritt Smith and his wife Francis Curtis Smith have left records across 5 states from census to census (VT, MI, IA, OH, and KS, in that order). The family is not listed in the 1885 Lincoln Co KS census at the website. Can anyone tell me if the 1885 KS census is available statewide in index form? If so, does anyone have access to this index that could please check to see if my people are listed. Thank you very, very much. Sincerely, richkurlich@hotmail.com _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. We stayed at the Post Rock Motel last Memorial Day Weekend. The propriators are really nice and very freindly and hospitable. They took good care of us. Unfortunately, the buildings are rather old, and there is no wheelchair access, for those who need that. The air conditioners were old and noisy, but the biggest problem was that most of the "guests" were truckers. That isn't a problem in and of itself - the truckers were nice enough, too. But unless you go to bed late and rise very, very early, or are 95% deaf, you don't get the amount of sleep you would like! It does have the advantage of being next door to the world famous Post Rock Restaurant. The food there was OK - some days better than others. It is frequented by locals, so it was interesting to sit and listen to people talk about Lincoln. We even ran into some distant relatives we have never met before, because we overheard some family names in their conversation! One thing I can say for Lincoln is that on both recent visits we ran into a lot of especially nice and helpful people. Only one exception. But most people bent over backward to help us. Wilda
Thanks Clarence for the information on the Woody House Mike Woody -- Visit Woody Gap and "Dig through the Woodpile". http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~woodygap/ Surnames: WOODY, WALSTROM, CROWL, BOWLIN, KLOER, HAFFTEN, AWE, BAUER --------------------------
Dear members of Lincoln List I am pleased to report that my wife and I stayed at Woody's House the first weekend of September. A very pleasant place. They have three rooms Rate $35-$45. Their continental breakfast was wonderful. The historical 1906 Queen Anne Victorian house contains many antique pieces of furniture. They even have a pen of antique chickens in their back yard with roosters that love to announce the beginning of a new day. Each room has a wash basin but the bathroom is shared. We recommend it highly. Their telephone No. 785-524-4744. Clarence Suelter
Well, looks like it's the Woody house for sure. I know for a fact that they are a hospitable lot <BG>. If anyone stays there please let us know what it's like and what you find inside. There is some history there in that house. We have a picture of it before it was moved and later became a B&B. There is a B&B called the Woody House, which is just east of town. The folks that own it are very involved in Lincoln history, etc., and I think it's nice. The motel is nothing to brag about, The Post Rock, but it's all there is. There is a hunting lodge up near Denmark that also is supposed to be nice but can't think of the name. Shouldn't be hard to find, though; I think it technically is in Hunter, Ks. Tracee
Hello all.... For those of you familiar with Lincoln County...... I've gotten an email from a couple who plan to visit the county area in the near future. They're interested in hotels/motels/bed-an-breakfasts in the area. Can anybody out there help me help them with info like this? I remember Tracee mentioning a great bed-and-breakfast near Lincoln a while back but of course I can find nothing of it now! Thanks in advance. It's not the best map on the Internet but if you'll go to: http://history.cc.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/graphics/maps/lincoln.jpg you'll see Orbitello in Highland Township (southwest corner of county). A better map (that takes a loooong time to load) showing Orbitello can be found at: http://www.cjnetworks.com/~wrs/1884map.jpg Also... the State Historical Society is currently working on a project to put the entire Kansas Post Office Directory up online. It's a great source for locating Kansas towns no longer around. Only the letter, "A" has been proofread so far but if any of you have Kansas place names you'd like to know about let me know. Hello Lincoln COunty researchers.... Sandy Foulke tried sending this to the list but I don't think it made it! So I'm going to send it. If it did make it please forgive the duplication..... sometimes we get bounceback messages from rootsweb indicating that a message wasn't sent and it looked like this was one of those bounce backs: >From the Lincoln Sentinel-Republican, Thursday Sept 21,2000 Letter to the editor: Recently I was given a box of papers belonging to Emory Wirth, born 1919 in Lincoln. I would like to get in touch with any family that might still be in the Lincoln County area who would like to have these papers, which include numerous World War II documents.
