Hi again: One last thing: I have indexed the 1982 obits, minus about seven papers at the end of the year. I'll rustle those up next month. Meanwhile, you can see the index at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/obit1982.htm Currently there is no link to it on the main page, but there will be. Tracee

Hi folks! The Salina Journal has had several articles recently about a man who is researching the 1869 Indian raid. My mom is a great clip service, but thankfully before I had typed in the article, Bill found it on the website. I thought some of you might be interested in reading about it: http://www.saljournal.com/stories/111300/new_Lincoln.html Tracee

Posted on: Lincoln Co. Ks Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ks/LincolnObits/6 Surname: Metz, Swihart, Melrose, Livingood, Cromwell ------------------------- (Newspaper obituary, Lincoln, Kansas) Daniel Swihart Metz, one of seven children of Eli and Sarah Metz, was born in Defiance county, Ohio February 9, 1861. He died October 26, 1947, the last of his generation, having reached the age of 86 years, eight months and 18 days. At an early age he moved with his parents to Ray County, Missouri, where he grew to manhood. He came to Lincoln County, Kansas in 1885 and settled on a farm two miles east of Lincoln where he lived continuously for forty years. There he was living when on May 19th, 1892, he married Nellie C. Melrose, there his children were born and reared and spent "the happiest years of his life." and that bit of earth to the time of his death, was to him, hallowed soil. He retired from active farming in 1925 and established a home in Lincoln. His wife, a companion of fifty years died March 21, 1942. All during his active years he took part in the worthwhile affairs of his community and was keenly interested in politics. He was a man of strong convictions and few men ever held more firmly to those things he believed to be right or was quicker to challenge those things he believed to be wrong. He was rigid and unbending to all that was sinister and bad in government, in morals or human conduct but recognized and appreciated every good act of his fellowmen. He is survived by all of his five children; four daughters, Mrs. Belle Livingood. Mrs. Florence Cromwell. Minnie Metz and Perl (sic) Metz, and one son, Theodore M. Metz, all of Lincoln: also eleven grand children and two great grand children and other relatives. Dan Metz, and others of his kind, will be missed by a world fast losing his qualities of rug------(remainder of obit not available)

Hi folks. Two new additions to the Lincoln County page. The first is an index of obituaries from the Lincoln Sentinel-Republican for 1988. It's too long to put in an e-mail so the URL is: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/obit1988.htm Let me know if there are any of these obits you'd like in full. Also, I have a copy of Kansas' World War I widows and mothers entitled to make a government-paid pilgrimage to their loved ones' graves by act of Congress (1929). There were only two from Lincoln, surnames HEIM and KNOX. The URL is: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/goldstar.htm I do have the entire list for Kansas if there is another county you are interested in. Lemme know. Tracee

Dear Lincoln County researchers... I have been negiligent in not reporting newer queries added to the Lincoln County KSGenWeb page of late. I'm listing the last three queries here: - --------------------------------------- Vivian James (email: byjames@yahoo.com) - 27 Aug 2000 DILLE family of Kansas. My great grandfather is Asa Jackson DILLE. His daughter Myrtle DILLE was born in Lincoln Co. KS in 1890. Her mothers name was Lillie. Asa DILLE is listed on the 1885 Census Lincoln Co.Township: Franklin. I would appreciate any information on the Dille family. I am willing to share my information. Thank you, Vivian James byjames@yahoo.com - ------------------------------------------------------ Jo Anne Peck (email: TWNSUPER@aol.com) - 17 Oct 2000 DOUGLASS and LYNE I am interested in finding any information on the following family (information here is from the 1885 Lincoln County Kansas state census): F. This is my great-great-uncle and am looking for any information on the family and heirs of Francis Marion Douglass. Also on his sister Sarah Lyne and her children. The information that I have on them is also from the 1885 Valley Twp, Lincoln Co census: I. M. (Israel) LYNE Sarah A. William E. Howard E. Thomas L. Adah L. Sarah died 12 March 1939 in Lincoln, Lincoln Co, Ks (obit in Lincoln Sentinel-Republican 23 March 1939. She had three more children - Grover C., Harlin L and Viola G. I am searching for any information and any family members. Jo Anne Peck - 1020 18th Avenue - Moline, Il 61265 - e-mail; twnsuper@aol.com - -------------------------------------------------------------- Shirley A. Towse (email: towse@horizon.hit.net) - 25 Oct 2000 SMITH, QUINN and PAGAN I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Chalmer SMITH. He was one of the scouts with General Forsyth at the battle of Beechers Island. I have read some histories of this battle and assume that Chalmer SMITH was a very young man at the time; so I guess he was born about 1845 to 1850. He died in Beverly, Kansas on March 31, 1919. He married Katherin QUINN and they had a Daughter Josephine Mary SMITH (Josie) who was born July 4, 1887. I have heard that Katherin QUINN SMITH died during childbirth or very shortly after. I would like to know if these facts are true; if they had any other children; and if so, where are the decendants. Josie married John Joseph PAGAN and they lived in Beverly during part of their marriage. They had a son and a daughter, Leone (my mother) born in Beverly on November 18, 1912. About all I know about this side of my family is that Leone had a cousin named Doris PAGAN and they loved to visit with Grandpa Chalmer SMITH and his freind Jack PEATE. My mother learned about the battle from them, but she was only seven years old when Grandpa SMITH died. I don't know much about the PAGAN family and nothing about the SMITH family. If anyone can give me some more information, I would appreciate it. - ----------------------------------------------- The Lincoln County KSGenWeb query page is located at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/queries.html Happy hunting Bill Sowers Bill & Diana Sowers 1746 Fairmont Rd, Topeka, KS 66604 - wrs@cjnetworks.com Lincoln Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/index.html Gove Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/gove/index.html Graham Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/graham/index.html Allen Co KS ALHN: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ks/county/allen/index.html Barton Co KS ALHN: http://www.geocities.com/irus86/ Barton Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/barton/index.html

Hi, folks. I've added a new bit of information to the Lincoln Cemetery page. There is a very small, unnamed cemetery west of Lincoln that has long interested me, and I have added a page about it, including how it came to be "rediscovered" and markers put in for the war veterans buried there. One man is a War of 1812 vet, another is a Civil War vet who drowned in the Saline River while trying to cross on horseback in 1878. A few months later, his widow lost most of their children to diphtheria. I took the inscriptions out of the Lincoln register, but I think there are actually more graves there than I have indicated, but I'll update as needed. The URL for those interested is http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/cem2.htm I also recently wrote to the Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society in Wichita regarding materials they had listed on their website from Lincoln cemeteries. I got those in the mail this week and have compared them to my own information. I came up with a few names I didn't have. Turns out someone had walked the Monroe Cemetery near Beverly in the late 1950s. Wish I had known before I walked it TWICE last year! (Tape recorder mishap.) But there are mistakes, so I do think it's good to have these cemeteries walked by as many people as possible. The other cemeteries they have are St. John Lutheran and Heiser. Clarence Suelter recently sent me another cemetery listing from the MHGS publication for "Aribitello Cemetery." I wrote for the original hoping it listed the contributor but no luck. There is no "Aribitello" Cemetery but I'm guessing the compiler was going for Orbitello, one of Lincoln's old post offices. However, there also isn't a cemetery called Orbitello. I think this may be the cemetery called Hynes [pronounced "Hinnish"] and I will try to go there in December and investigate further. The surnames on the list are KALB, MILLER and PUTNAM if those are of interest to anyone. There are seven burials there, according to this list, but if this is Hynes, there should be more, so right now it's confusing. I have sent pleas to various folks in Sylvan regarding cemetery listings there but so far have only gotten the plot purchases for the non-Lutheran side of the cemetery. If there's anyone out there with any pull in Sylvan Grove, I could use some help there. Otherwise, I'll hope for no snow in December so I can walk that cemetery. But it is huge, by Lincoln County standards, anyway! The cemetery index now has more than 7,000 names, by my rough reckoning. But without Sylvan and Milo, I'm still not satisfied. Hope everyone's research is going well! Tracee
Hello all.... The following query is currently on the Lincoln County page. We received an email from a lady with information for the family recently.... but the query's email address gets a bounce back. Is anybody familiar with the email address below? If yes let Diana and me know and we'll forward the info to the person. Thanks Bill - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- lilyvalentine@earthlink.net - 09 March 2000 I am trying to find out information on my true grandfather. He was Emerson McREYNOLDS. When he married Pearl Elizabeth TURNER she was 14 years of age and he was 21. She was born 2 Sep 1907. I know he was born in Colorado and spent most of his life in prison, however, he did not die in prison. This is the extent of what is known about him. Can you help or direct me elsewhere? Further they moved to Oklahoma and she remarried to Lester Hillman 10-16-26 but she was back in Kansas at that time, so I don't know if their divorce was in Oklahoma or in Kansas. Most everything concerning the Turner family though was in Lincoln county. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Bill & Diana Sowers 1746 Fairmont Rd, Topeka, KS 66604 - wrs@cjnetworks.com Lincoln Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/index.html Gove Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/gove/index.html Graham Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/graham/index.html Allen Co KS ALHN: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ks/county/allen/index.html Barton Co KS ALHN: http://www.geocities.com/irus86/ Barton Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/barton/index.html
