Hello Lincoln County researchers.... We've added the rest of page 4, pages 5-6, and the first part of page 7 to the 1870 Lincoln County census page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/census1870.htm That's it for now until I can get back to the State Historical Society. If any of you can help with the spelling/name/etc problems let me know. I can add notes with your additions/corrections on the census page. Happy New Year... almost. Bill
Thanks so much for taking time to transcribe these records! Wilda Morris
Hello Lincoln COunty researchers.... We now have a "Reader's Digest Condensed Version" of the 1870 census of Lincoln County started online at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/census1870.htm This page contains only part of the information found in the 1870 census.... thus the glib remark about Reader's Digest condensed version. Only about 25% of the people found in Lincoln County in 1870 are up online at present. I have to use the microfilm at the Kansas State Historical Society so I'm limited in when I can get over to do this. later Bill Sowers
Hello Lincoln County researchers.... Carolyn Ward, state co-coordinator of KSGenWeb, has recently added vol. 4 of the 1919 edition of A STANDARD HISTORY OF KANSAS AND KANSANS online at: <http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/1919ks/index.html>http://skyways. lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/1919ks/index.html I did some searching and found two former Lincoln County residents in the online book: Virgil Oliver HERMAN (born in Lincoln County December 20, 1876. Living in Garden City, KS, in 1919) <http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/1919ks/h/hermanvo.html>http://sky ways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/1919ks/h/hermanvo.html Guy C. BIGGS (son of Alexander BIGGS of Lincoln County. Living in Lane County, KS, in 1919) <http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/1919ks/b/biggsgc.html>http://skyw ays.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/1919ks/b/biggsgc.html You can do a search on Blue Skyways (the server where much of KSGenWeb is located) and see if you have relations in this book. Just go to: <http://skyways.lib.ks.us/skysearch.html>http://skyways.lib.ks.us/skysearch. html Just as a sample I decided to see if there were any entries in this book for Barton County, Kansas. This is the search I did: 1919 and standard and kansans and "barton county" Be sure to put "barton county" (or "pawnee county" or "stanton county" etc etc in quotes) My Barton County search turned up 18 entries.... 16 of them were from the 1919 history. You can do this search for all sorts of things on blue skyways. FYI.... the complete 5 volume set of the 1918 edition of the STANDARD HISTORY is also online at: <http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/1918ks>http://skyways.lib.ks.us/g enweb/archives/1918ks/ Happy New Year to you all. Hi, folks. I've finished an index of 1987 obituaries from the Lincoln Sentinel-Republican. No link yet on the main page, but this is the URL: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/obit1987.htm Tracee
I just saw that the 1920 Kansas census images are online at http://www.Ancestry.com for free until Dec. 21,2000. Just thought I'd let everyone know. Mary
Hi Muriel and other Lincoln County researchers.... Thanks for mentioning the 1895 census index, Muriel. There is a link to it on the main page of Lincoln County KSGenWeb but unfortunately the main page has gotten so "cluttered" the last few years (the price we pay for one of the most active genealogy county pages I've ever seen!) that it's easily missed. If any of you are interested in locating relatives in 1895 the State HIstorical Society's online index that Muriel mentioned now includes all and partial county listings for about 15 percent (that's the last number I heard) of the population of Kansas in that census. Hello LIncoln County researchers..... A bit of "tekkie news" for you. I am forwarding the message below to you so you'll be aware of possible glitches with the Lincoln County genealogy email list (or any other rootsweb email list) starting Friday, December 8th. Rootsweb will be upgrading its server starting Friday. The message below should give you an idea of possible problems... if any... that might occur. Also... I've gotten several obits and births to add to the page within the past week. My apologies for not putting them up. Tracee, Diana and I are working on different aspects of the page and I haven't had the time. I will get to them this weekend. Have a great weekend Bill SOwers Here's the message from rootsweb: Hello Everyone, The moving van for the lists3 upgrade has arrived! As was stated in an earlier (a week or so ago) message, RootsWeb will be upgrading its lists3.rootsweb.com mail server. This is desperately needed! You may have a few questions. Q: How do I know if any of *my* mailing lists will be affected during the move? A: An alphabetical listing of all mailing lists that will be impacted by the upgrade can be found at: <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lindv/move3> Q: When will the upgrade take place? A: The upgrade will commence Friday, 8 December 2000 at 7:00 A.M. Pacific Standard Time (GMT -08:00) Q: How will the upgrade impact my ability to maintain mailing list(s)? A: Starting at 7:00 A.M. (PST), lists3.rootsweb.com will be unavailable. We expect the entire upgrade to take 10 hours. Lists3 will not process mail for most of that time. Q: Will people still be able to post to mailing lists during the upgrade? A: Yes and No. - No messages will be lost, though will be delayed. - Messages will not be posted to mailing lists until *after* the upgrade/move is fully completed. Q: Will I be able to use my lists3.rootsweb.com utility page during the upgrade? A: Yes, but: - No subscribe/unsubscribe commands will be lost, though they will be delayed. - When the move is completed, your old utility page will automatically be redirected to the new list server. Be sure to bookmark the new location. - If you use old-fashioned X-Commands (most of you don't), and get a "suspicious format" error, send all X-Commands to lists7.rootsweb.com instead of lists3.rootsweb.com. Q: Will anything be lost during the upgrade? A: If your list settings or files (welcome message, accept list, etc.) are updated while we are in the process of moving your list to the new server, all changes may be lost. Please be sure to review your entire list setup upon the upgrade's completion. Q: What do I do if I find "bugs" after the upgrade? A: If all goes well, there won't be any bugs to report. Right. But if you do happen to spot some anomalies (new anomalies, not the ones that are inherent in SmartList that we've been living with for four-odd years now), post a message to listowners-L@rootsweb.com Sincerely, Vicki Lindsay Thauvin RootsWeb List Mover in Training vicki@rootsweb.com

Hi, folks! Mary Smith from our list has done a truly wonderful thing: She walked Milo Cemetery and indexed all the tombstones! This is one of the two "biggies" left undone (Sylvan is the other) and I can't tell you what a great help this will be. As most of you know, Milo is the cemetery that includes most of the families that settled in and around Barnard, so this list will be a godsend to those of you researching in that neck of the woods. So if you need lookups from the list, let me know! And join me in giving Mary a big round of applause! Tracee
Thanks for sharing the story of Harvey. I am a retired psychologist and have worked with people with mental retardation all of my career. I had tears in my eyes as I read the story. I have worked with many people who have had similar experiences with the county and state care institutions in the state of Iowa. Most are good places with staff who care about those people for whom they work. Thanks again. This is a little off topic, but I couldn't resist sharing this with the list. I was researching my Quillin line and started looking in geographical areas that hadn't occured to me before. On a hunch, I e-mailed a woman listed on a querie for an unfamiliar (to me) Iowa county, who was also researching the name Quillin. The hunch paid off, and I found a missing link that has allowed me to trace the line back to at least 1750. But the real story is the one that Doris Russell, the woman I contacted, told me. Follow the link below to the DeMoines Register and read the article entitled "Harvey has a family." It is a very moving story about how genealogy can lead you down unexpected paths (there is even a Kansas connection): http://www.dmregister.com/news/stories/c4788998/13032272.html Doris Russell and Harvey Quillin, both mentioned in the story, are distant relatives of mine. Happy holidays to all. Scott Holl
Hi, folks. I've indexed the 1983 obituaries and the list is available at http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/obit1983.htm There is no link as yet on the main page, but the URL will take you right there. Let me know if you want full obits on anyone, but give me some time to fulfill your requests. I'm typing in the obits as I get asked for them so there will be a slight delay. Tracee
Hi, folks: If you are going to be near Lincoln in December, you might want to check out the home tour. It will include four houses, the Hap Pagan "mansion" (!) built in 1908, later known as the Bloomheart House, from Beverly; the Zink home, a brick Tudor built in 1945; the Minx home of 1906; and of course the Yohe house, built in 1885 as the Marshall house and featuring the original furnishings from the turn of the century, down to carpets, dishes, etc. Yours truly will be guiding tours on Dec. 16, apparently; the homes are open both Dec. 16 and 17. I also have a soft spot for the Bloomheart House, because it was picked up and moved to Lincoln from Beverly and I rode along with it! Anyway, if you're interested, the dates again are Dec. 16 and 17, 2-5 p.m. Tickets are $8 and for a good cause; the Lincoln Historical Society is in a battle over what to do with the Yohe house, which they own, and it is in danger of being sold. It literally had not been touched inside for about 70 years, so trying to recreate it would be nearly impossible. Anyway, proceeds benefit the group that works on maintaining it. I know most of you are far away from the old hometown, but thought it was worth a try! Tracee
