Hello Lincoln County Researchers, I wanted to share that I have a copy of the book "Bit of Sweden in the Desert". It is a history book of Kingsburg, CA which was largely settled by people of Swedish descent. I do know that the Poulson Family from Lincoln County, KS settled in Kingsburg around 1904. If you have Swedish ancestry from Lincoln County and have lost a few of the relatives, they may have moved on to Kingsburg. If anyone would like for me to do a lookup from this book, please let me know. Thanks, Lori Graff rastus@pld.com
Hi, folks. Two more years of obits have been indexed: 1886 and 1887. In addition, I have added the obits from 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889 and 1890 to the website. They can be accessed through the index pages. If you want to take a look, go to http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/dirobit.htm Tracee
Thanks to Robyn Osborn, we have three new obituaries on the page: Alzean Effie Taylor, Lott Gardner Taylor and John L. Taylor. Thanks, Robyn! Tracee
Hello Lincoln County researchers..... Just south of Highland Township in Lincoln County (about ten miles) in neighboring Ellsworth County lies the town of Wilson. Wilson is known as The Czech Capital of Kansas and has had an annual celebration of its Czech heritage for years. Jeanne Cunningham, county coordinator of Ellsworth County, is setting up a list of Wilson High School grads at: <http://www.geocities.com/athens/Troy/3048/index.html>http://www.geocities. com/athens/Troy/3048/index.html I'm mentioning it to all of you as some of your Lincoln Co relations might have "crossed the border" and gone to school there. later Bill Sowers Bill & Diana Sowers 1746 Fairmont Rd, Topeka, KS 66604 - wrs@cjnetworks.com Lincoln Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/index.html Graham Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/graham/index.html Barton Co KS ALHN: http://www.geocities.com/irus86/ Barton Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/barton/index.html Our Family pages: http://www.cjnetworks.com/~wrs/

Please be patient -- I have gotten requests for 127 obits in the past week alone -- and please don't resend your request thinking I didn't get the first one. Happy hunting! Tracee
Hi, folks! I'm finally getting around to posting some information sent by Tonya Peck, who got permission from Marge Lawson to excerpt her history of Sylvan Grove. First up is a three-part history of the churches in Sylvan Grove, with tons of names in each. Below are the URLs for the new pages and a list of surnames found on each, which Tonya very kindly provided. Take a look; I was surprised to find my bigamist great-great-grandfather among the Presbyterians! You never know... Again, thanks to Tonya for this work, and there will be more to come... Hi, folks! I've just added indexes for the rest of the 1990s to the page. The new years are 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997 and can be found by going to the obit directory at http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/dirobit.htm If you have requests for obits, do me a favor and gather them in ONE message and then give me some time to get them done. This gives us indexes for all obits from 1979 to the present. If I have time tomorrow, I'll send a list of the 2001 obits so far. I have to say, the obits in the Lincoln paper are nearly worthless these days unless the family pays to have a bigger space. They are barely in English and it's really depressing to type them, frankly, as I have to try to put in complete sentences, articles, etc. But I guess they're better than nothing. Tomorrow I'll add some pages about the Sylvan community that were contributed by Tonya Peck! Tracee

Hello Lincoln County researchers... If you belong to any other rootsweb.com email list you've probably already gotten this email... but for those of you who haven't........ Starting at 8 a.m. PST Friday, February 23, RootsWeb will begin a planned temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers and hosting process. It will limit this downtime as much as possible, and will return with increased performance and reliability for future growth. The down time will be about 24 hours. If you do not receive any postings during this time do not worry, all will be back up and running soon. This down time will most likely stop all traffic on the Lincoln County genealogy list but it won't effect the Lincoln County KSGenWeb page as we're on another server.... unless a major snow storm hits the Kansas CIty area between now and Saturday... then I'll have to eat my words!<grin> later Bill Bill & Diana Sowers 1746 Fairmont Rd, Topeka, KS 66604 - wrs@cjnetworks.com Lincoln Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/index.html Gove Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/gove/index.html Graham Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/graham/index.html Allen Co KS ALHN: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ks/county/allen/index.html Barton Co KS ALHN: http://www.geocities.com/irus86/ Barton Co KSGenWeb: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/barton/index.html

Hi Scott...... I checked the Kansas Post Office Directory (lists all the postoffices in Kansas, 1828-1961) and there is no Culbert. Only thing close is Culver, in neighboring Ottawa County about 12(?) miles ESE of Beverly. By the way... if anybody out there would like to to know of the county location of any Kansas places that might have had a post office let me know and I'll check it in the post office directory. It includes many, many rural places in Kansas that have come and gone through the years... also includes name changes for town. Hello Lincoln County researchers.... Thanks to Carolyn Ward, one of the state coordinators of KSGenWeb, we've had a link to a small, colored map of Lincoln County in 1878 for some time (taken from the Kansas State Board of Agric. Report). I'm sorry to say that for a long I've had a larger black and white version of this map in my email attache folder at work! Many moons ago I scanned this map (one of the first and only graphics I've ever scanned) but couldn't put it up on the web page because it was huge (over 700K) and took forver to load. I posted a message to the list about this and some kind soul shrank the map down to a manageable size and then sent it back to me as an attachment in my computer at work..... where I forgot about it! I stumbled across it today, loaded it and put it on the Maps page at Lincoln County KSGenWeb. So if you'd like a good look at Lincoln County in 1878 the URL is: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/1878map.jpg And to the person who shrank this map.... where/who-ever you are.... thanks. Bill

Hi, folks! Thanks to Tonya Peck, we have two new pages about the early days of Sylvan Grove, chock full of names: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/sylvana.htm A list of early settlers, when they came to Sylvan, and what state they came from. Surnames include Bacon, Bender, Biggs, Buzick, Dengate, Ellis, Grubb, Hurlbut, Ide, Knox, Lewis, McVey, Masterson, Mettlen, Morgan, Peck, Seibert, Simmons, Spencer, Troup, Vonada, Ward, Witte http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/sylvanb.htm A brief history of the formation of schools in Sylvan Grove, including the names of early teachers: Surnames include Artman, Baker, Bell, Berger, Berkley, Biggs, Blythe, Botlz, Bowen, Brumbaugh, Buzick, Creighton, Decker, Denboice, Farnsworth, Fenney, Ford, Fouts, Frazier, Gilipin, Grim, Harmon, Henning, Hillmer, Holway, Jeffers, Kistler, Kohler, Lewis, Merriman, Morgan, Norris, Nulton, Osterfund, Pease, Peck, Pilcher, Porter, Richards, Richardson, Roach, Seirer, Sellman, Shank, Shannon, Sigley, Smith, Spencer, Stalions, Stine, Stone, Thompson, Thrun, Waterman, Wohler I've also added this page: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/cath2.htm A list of those who gave memorial stained glass windows and/or Stations of the Cross statues for St. Patrick's Church. Includes many of the early Irish settlers. Thanks again, Tonya, for the submissions. Tonya has gotten permission to excerpt a book by Marge Lawson called "Honoring Our Heritage," a history of Sylvan Grove, and is typing in selected portions to put on the Lincoln County page. This is a tremendous boon to the page and I am very grateful! Tracee
Hi, folks. The 1984 index is also up, at http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/obit1984.htm FYI, I index the papers but don't type in the obits as I go. (I made an exception with 188, 1889 and 1890 because there were so few obits, and frankly, they were really interesting!) If I typed as I went, we'd have about 3 years indexed. As a comparison, the 1888 obits are about 7 pages of 10-point type in Microsoft Word. The 1998 obits are 60 pages of 10-point type in Microsoft Word. So when you request obits from years I haven't done, I dig them out and type them in at that point. In other words, if you request obits and it takes awhile...that's why! But I don't think anyone's been kept waiting more than a week. That really is it from me for awhile! Tracee
