I did find an article in a Topeka paper about a "Jefferson D. Wells" and an "Anna Klein" being married there on March 14, 1885. The article gave no ages but I found "J. D. Wells" and "Anna Wells" as a couple on the 1885 census in Topeka, both age 22--which is close to his age. He gave his birth state as Kansas and she as Iowa, although I thought the 1880 said he was born in Missouri, so still not sure it is your Jeff. However, on the 1895 Moorhead, MN I find Jefferson D. (born 1862 MO), Anna (born 1863 IA) and son Carl (born 1887 KS). How and why they were in MN I don't know. If you don't have access to those censuses, email me at my Gmail address-- mkat72 There were at least three "Jefferson D(avis) Wells" born in Missouri between 1860-1862, and two were in the Missouri death records, but neither gave the mother's maiden name as Scranton.
