I have been searching the 1860 Census records for Leavenworth, KS. because that is where Mathew Smith my 2nd great grand-father died. I think he probably had other family living in that area. And now I also found that John Smith b. abt. 1815 in Ireland and was living in Leavenworth with his wife Mary and a son John who was 13 and born in Iowa. This is very amazing as that is where Mathew Smith and his family had come through on their way to KS. and that is where Mathew's wife Jane Bateman Smith died in 1857 it is said that she died along the trail on their way to KS. and then Mathew Smith died in Aug. 1859 in Leavenworth, KS. Also Mathew and Jane had a son named Thomas Y. Smith so he could have named his son after a brother or his father and then Thomas named his son Leonard W. Smith. According to a burial reciept found with some probate records on file in Holton, Jackson Co., KS it states that M! athew Smith died in Leavenworth and that he had recieved medical care prior to his death in Leavenworth, KS. So I am wondering if the John, Thomas and Mathew could have been brothers. If anyone know's of a link to Mathew Smith please email me... I would love to share family info, and exchange stories. Thank you, Sincerely, Cheryl
