The LaCygne Weekly Journal Linn County Friday March 5, 1897 Stole His Cousin's Wife. James Russell Leaves With John Spencer's Faithless Wife. James Russell, a young man well known in this community, an dthe wife of John Spencer departed from this city together Monday night and have so far succeeded in keeping their whereabouts unknown. Russell is a single man and has been living with Spencer, who is his cousin, during the past month. They had been arranging to go to Colorado in a few weeks , but Russell changed his mind one day last week and sold his team and wagon and what other property he had and told Spencer he was going to Colorado. Spencer was a little suspicious of his wife during the past week and remonstrated with her and it is evident she told Russell about it, for Saturday evening Russell was inclined to be quarrelsome at the house and Mrs. Spencer settled the fuss by announcing that she would go home until the two men quit quarreling. She remained that night and the next morning went to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. TUSH, north of town, where she remained that night, returning home Monday morni! ng. She only stayed at home a short time, making some excuse to go back and spend the day at the home of her parents, saying she would meet her husband at church that night and accompany him home. Mr. SPENCER went to church but his wife failed to put in an appearance and he supposed that she had changed her mind about going to church and would return home in the morning. This was not the case, however, for Russell had hired a team at the livery barn and was driving fast for the Missouri line with Spencer's wife while the deserted husband was looking for her to come to church. Spencer wnet home after church and went to bed and knew nothing of his wife's unfaithfulness until late Tuesday morning. He received information which left him to believe the guilty couple would be found in Kansas City and so notified the authorities there.
