The Guardian Angel's Home closed 1 Sept 1960 after 72 yrs. It is the present site of St John's Hospital. The home was conducted by 11 Oblate Sisters of Providence, and received colored boys from 4 to 12 years of age from Kansas and beyond. Although conducted primarily for Catholic children, it also received Protestant boys. The Home was an old farm house, on an 80 acre farm, and was more or less of a make-shift for the purpose for which it must be used. It was home for about 50 boys. There were four orphanages in Leavenworth. St Vincent's for white boys and girls, Guardian Angel Home for colored boys, Holy Epiphany Home for colored girls, and Kansas State Protective Home Association which admitted the aged as well as colored boys and girls. Info from Leavenworth Orphanages, from a community Study in 1921.
