Typically, patrons send us a letter or an e-mail requesting that we perform a search for them. Upon receiving this, we will assess whether we have the information they need. If we do not, we will attempt to direct them to a source that will have their information. If we believe that our resources might have the information they want, we will then request a fee (see next section) and more information on their research request. Once the fee is received, we will begin the search. It should be he noted that the reference staff has other duties, so it may lake a month or two for us to complete your search. Some of the sources we have available include: Federal and State Censuses Birth and Death Records Marriage Records Divorce Records Deed Records Naturalization Records Cemetery Records City Directories Maps Phonographs Leavenworth Times Leavenworth High School Yearbooks Cost of Services Document searches, regardless of size of the search or actual information found, are assessed a fee of $15.00. In the case of multiple searches or particularly difficult searches a larger fee may be requested. This fee covers the time taken for the search, photocopies, and mailing charges. Although we will need the fee before we begin the search, we will not deposit the fee until the search is completed. All checks should be made payable to the Leavenworth Public Library and sent to the address below. Please note: Simply because we offer to conduct a search does not guarantee that we will find anything, and the search fee is non-refundable. In the case of photograph duplication, if the patron comes in and selects the photo themselves, the library will charge a $10.00 processing fee. If the librarian conducts a search for the photo, there will be the usual $15.00 fee. In either case, the patron will then have to work with the photo shop to get a copy of the photo. Leavenworth Public Library Attn: Reference Staff 417 Spruce Leavenworth, KS 66048 Writing Requests It is important when writing your research request to include as much detail as possible. Are they online? Is there a library that keeps them? I need to find a death/obit for a Mr. "unknown" Leonard that was supposedly murdered somewhere between those times. One more thing! I have O'Brien in me! My g-g-grandmother was Anna O'Brien Hardy from Chicago. I still haven't found her line, too little to go on. All I know is that her Father was William from Buffalo NY her mother was Elizabeth Unknown, there was 10 kids, I only know three, William, who had a son William too, Minnie O'Brien Stone m. James"Jim" Stone and Anna who married Dexter Davis Hardy. I do have the whole Hardy line. Someday maybe I will find them> Valerie Longmire

Now if I could find an obit/death record on him that would help. I know the Leonard I am searching for was supposedly murdered so there is a high chance of it being reported in the papers. Seeing he was military, probably stationed at FT. Leavenworth, I wonder what records they may have? Got a clue? I know his daughter Margaret Leonard was born in 1879 and he supposedly died shortly after. But that was over a hundred years ago and the chances of it being accurate is slim. Maybe it is just a tall tell, who knows? Thank you so very much, Valerie

Eleanor: My Grandfather had a brother that was named Frank M. Garth, whom married a Julia L. Porter. She was born 13 January 1880 in Kirksville, Missouri. Her parents names was John L. Porter and Mary Elizabeth ? . Could this be any of your relation? They had four daughters and one son. One of the four daughters, I kept in touch with until her death, now I keep in touch with her daughter. Could this be any connection to you, Leavenworth, KS isn't too far away. Am new to the list and have another question. Are there published compilations of cemeteries for Leavenworth? I have visited the website where the cemeteries are all listed, but contents of each one weren't available. I am searching for one Mary E. or Mary Elizabeth (Porter) O'BRIEN who died, if not at the end of 1869, then shortly into 1870, along with a newborn child. I would presume she was Catholic - her husband Thomas M. O'Brien was raised Catholic in Baltimore. Whether he stayed with the church once they moved west in 1859, remains to be learned. She was alive on Aug. 6, 1869 to be served with a summons re the law suit, but she was NOT in the 1870 census in New Orleans with Thomas and their children. If anyone does "lookups" in this category, I would be most grateful. And advice on where to look further would also be appreciated. Eleanor McCain Concord, NH [email protected]
Am new to the list and need a bit of help/advice, please. Have just acquired copies (from LDS microfilm)of my great-grandfather's bankruptcy as entered in the Civil Docket Court records. He was forced to sell his house and I want to find a copy of the filed deed. There are no reels of microfilm for Leavenworth Co.'s deed records in the Family History Library catalog (that I can find). 1. Are there published indexes for deeds? 2. From whom would I acquire a copy of the deed - which court, and address? Thomas M. and Mary E. O'Brien owned the house, located on the W. side of Main betw. Osage & Pottawatomie. In the 1868/69 city directory, that section of Main was called Esplanade. The entry on the Civil Docket was for Dec. 21, 1869 - property sold Jan 8 1870 sale confirmed and deed indexed. Any assistance will be appreciated. Eleanor McCain Concord, NH [email protected]

M. HOFMAN went west yesterday on a business trip, and will be absent about ten days. The Kansas Central was unable to leave yesterday, owing to land slides occasioned by the late rains. Ernest STANLEY, business manager of John THOMPSON's famous troupe, was in the city yesterday, and left for Kansas City last evening. The Seventh street bridge is "gone up," and if something is not done immediately, the Fifth street bridge will follow suit in a few days. The Missouri Pacific was four hours behind time yesterday, owing to the washing away of a portion of the bridge at Nine Mile creek, below the Junction. Judge ALLER arrived home yesterday from Chicago, where he has been for several days attending a meeting of the officers of the Chicago and Rock Island railroad. Mr. B. F. CARLETON, of Kansas City, who has been spending several days in our city, left last evening for home. He was escorted to the depot by many of his friends. Edwin O'HARA, one of the leading distillers of St. Louis, has been spending a few days with his friends in this city. It is needless to say that he was well entertained by them. Mr. DAMON, one of the oldest liquor merchants in St. Louis, has been sojourning with us for the last two days. He is a clever gentleman, and has a large number of friends here. The surprise party at the residence of Frank HOPPER on Wednesday night was one of the pleasantest affairs of the season. Everybody present enjoyed themselves to their heart's content. B. E. THOMPSON, of the Palace drug store, has secured the services of Mr. Charles B. PALMER, formerly of St. Louis and Kansas City, as a prescription clerk. Mr. PALMER seems to be a clever gentleman, and thoroughly posted in his business. Charley ACKENHAUSEN has received a new brand of cigars, called the "Kickapoo," in honor of the old cannon of that name, captured by the Free State men in 1858. The cigar is well flavored, and is in great demand among the old settlers. A. BIEGA has the handsomest soda fountain in the city. The fountain is surrounded by gas jets in the shape of a crescent, with red, white, and blue lights. Dennis CROWLEY, the well-known plumber and gas fitter, did the job in an excellent and artistic manner. >From papers found on the man killed at the freight depot on Wednesday evening by one of the trains of the Kansas Pacific railway, it was learned that his real name was J. W. HACKSTAFF, and that he came here from Sacramento, California. The jury's verdict was that he came to his death by accident. John KIRCH's famous trotter "Stranger," was shipped to Freeport, Illinois, a few days ago to be ready for the summer races. This horse was sired by Highlander and a pacing mare. He was foaled in Stranger township in this county, and won thirteen races last year. He is now in his seventh year and can trot in about 2:20. Mr. KIRCH has paid considerable attention to "Stranger" and is naturally very proud of him. Capt. Sam ROBBINS, civil engineer in connection with the National cemeteries, has been at the fort for the last two days, and left yesterday afternoon for Kansas City. Major ROBBINS is one of the best known men in our state, connected with the government. He served several years as captain in the Seventh United States cavalry, and was known as one of its bravest officers. Had his friends here known that he was at the fort, he would have been waited upon by a large delegation of our best men. Thomas PLOWMAN leaves to-day on the Kansas Central for the West, and Southwest, for the purpose of advertising our horse and stock fair. Mr. John H. We regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Peter CARROLL, which occurred on Sunday evening at her residence, 318 West Seventh street. She leaves a sorrowing husband and four children. A small house in South Leavenworth belonging to J. RODENHAM, and occupied by a colored family was destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. Insured by Martin SMITH in the German American. E. J. FARNSWORTH, of the Missouri Valley Bridge company left yesterday with a large gang of men for the extension of the Narrow Gauge; the company having contracted to build all the bridges on that road. Louis ABRAHAM, one of the most estimable young men of the city, and for many years connected with the great western clothing house of E. Michael, left yesterday for Clay Center. We understand that he is going into business for himself at that place and hope that he will reap abundant success from the undertaking. Mr. S. K. Judge MORTON of Topeka was in the city yesterday, and left for Oskaloosa, where he will open court this morning. Keno, faro, poker and monte are among the things that "used to was" in this city for the present. Wonder if the coming election had anything to do with it? The alarm of fire at 3:30 o'clock yesterday morning was occasioned by the burning of a stable belonging to Geo. P. ELBERT, in the alley on Olive street, between Fourth and Fifth streets. Mad Anthony, the hook-nosed blackmailer of the Leavenworth "Times" has withdrawn his libel suit against MARKSON. No wonder, as no jury of twelve men could be found in the county who would believe him under oath. Miss Carrie VALLIANT, an interesting young lady, daughter of Joseph VALLIANT, Esq., of the Central hotel, died on Monday, in the twenty-third year of her age. The family of Mr. VALLIANT have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. Mad Anthony is trying his best to burlesque the action of the legislature with reference to the action taken by them in expelling the correspondent of the Kansas City "Times." Liars, blackmailers and blackguards invariably stick together. The street commissioner is having all the ruts and break-neck excavations on Pottawatomie street filled up, a job very much needed. A look at Ottawa street between Fifth and Sixth, we think, would convince him that a little spare rock and dirt would not be at all wasted there. We had a new moon yesterday, which may in some way account for the periodical fit of lunacy of Mad Anthony, the hook-nosed man of destiny of the "Times." People, we presume, will be charitable enough not to notice him for a few weeks, or else give him actions the charity of their silence.
