Hi List, I am new to this list and need some help finding information on William Edward Groh. He married Clara Koons in Leavenworth County on Oct. 20, 1907. Clara (Koons) Groh was my husband's grandmother's sister. We believe that they had 3 children but the only one we are sure of is a son named Edward Groh. William Edward Groh went by "Ed". We believe he remarried after Clara died (ca. 1940) to a lady named Elsie. I am trying to get a copy of the marriage lic. but do not know how. I have the FHL LCGS #(1854768/105), Book: N, Page#: 316, but I don't live near a Family History Library. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Linda Stineff Ragley,LA. [email protected]

Surnames: Lawler, Bartlett, Mendenhall, Trow Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Fm.2ADE/222 Message Board Post: Since I’ve started helping people with the Freedom of Information Act info in early November, I have been virtually swamped with requests. I’ve had over 1,100 requests for it, just about 200 really, really nice responsive letters and emails in response (which is a nice surprise, most people just get the info and move on), about 350 requests for additional help via email and snail mail and another 87+ who let me know they’ve found the info they’ve been looking for with the additional help. Also, a total of 9 people sent me vile, nasty, swearing emails about how I shouldn’t be helping people like this on rootsweb. But they’re obviously a sorry lot so I don’t pay them any mind. *** So, I’m happy to report that for the $7.00 for paper, copying, staples, large envelope and postage costs, it’s well worth it! The Freedom of Information Act is a tool that is available to everyone. The request is free but it can be very confusing. You have to know where to send it, you have to have the right request form, a properly worded letter, you have to know what type of information they need to get you what you are looking for. You cannot just send in a generic "find this" request. I found a way to use FOIA in genealogy to request records that actually moves your search along. In my every day legal work I use the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) to acquire records from all areas. I will send you the forms (both State and Federal), sample request letters, what you need to send in terms of specifics, if you have them, or if not, some suggestions on where and how to find them. I have compiled a list of each State’s statutes and codes that you will need to reformat the request form for your particular State or the State you are sending the request to. I have included some specific searching directions and examples that may help you. For those of us who have been unable to get to an out-of-town location or to afford a researcher it's great. My email contact is or [email protected] not the email listed on this posting. Or simply follow the directions below! I will be happy to help anyone with any additional information or reformatting the forms for other states, other data requests, etc. Any other requests for help, I will send a form. I have to request $6.58 for paper, copying, staples, large envelope and postage costs. This package of information is 26+ pages (and growing) -- and I had no idea this would be responded to in such huge numbers (!!). So, if you*re interested, send $7.00 in cash or check [Kathy Lawler] to Genealogy Princess, 20757 Camden Square, #210, Lathrup Village, MI 48076 or use my Paypal address [checking] for $7.00 to [email protected] or [email protected] Either way, don’t forget your address!! I will send you the information the very day I receive your address and funds. Lastly, additional information, new ways I can come up with to use FOIA will be sent to you free of charge and I*ll also be happy to answer any questions you may have. Lastly, I have a larger bunch of information in my "FOIA IN GENEALOGY WORKS! on Ebay. Check that out! Thanks! Kathleen Lawler

Dear List Members, I look forward to the year 2003 being a great one for our list. Because of the amount new members we have subscribing every day, I feel it is time to again post the suggested rules of the list...even us long time members need reminding once in a while. 1 I have very few rules on the lists I watch over. The main one is to treat your fellow members as you would like to be treated. Also the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me Kathleen Burnett [email protected] 2. If someone posts a message to the list that should not have been posted, please just delete it. Know that I am taking care of the problem. When you post your unhappiness, then you just continue on the problem. I know it is hard when your heart has been offended, but for my sake, and the sake of the list, please just delete it. Rootsweb has a wonderful Spam Detective and it stops most of it. You should see what comes across my screen. I have to look at each of them to make sure that what was stopped was truly Spam. Once in a while, one slips by though and if this happens, just delete it and go on with what we all love, genealogical research. Some suggestions to make our list run smoother are: 1. If you would put information such as names, places, and dates relating to your posting, in the subject line, it might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. 2. Please remember to delete the taglines and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 3. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. If you do notice that one of our members has a virus, please do not post their name and e-mail address across the list. Let me know and I will take care of the problem. Most likely the member already knows and is in a major state of stress. Receiving messages of each of us will only cause his or her stress level to rise. 4. Please remember, we have members from all walks of life, all ages and all levels of education on our list. Be understanding. The very person who mis-spelled every other word in their posting could be the very one with your missing family bible in their attic. Some sites to remember: 1. There is a great Rootsweb site, Password Central, you can go to if You want to find out what Rootsweb lists you are a member of or need to unsubscribe from a list, just follow the instructions. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ 2. If you would like to visit the archived messages for this list you may go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you want to see the archives for. From there you can search by date. 3. If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fullers Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. Mrs. JOHNSON, who lives just north of the Santa Fe crossing on the pike south of the city, shot and instantly killed an old veteran names P. DONAHUE, a member of the home, in her house about 5 o'clock yesterday evening. She was immediately arrested and placed in the county jail. She refused to say anything concerning the killing, further than that the man had refused to leave her premises when ordered out. When she made a peremptory request of him to take his leave and he refused, she drew a revolver and shot him. The home authorities took charge of the remains. William SCHULLEM (or Schullen), aged 14 years, was arrested late last evening on the charge of assaulting Julius S. EDWARDS, of the Globe Canning Company. Upon being questioned, he admitted he was the one who struck Mr. EDWARDS, but afterward denied it. This statement, however, was considered sufficient to hold him, and he was locked up. Mr. EDWARDS was better yesterday, and his physician is more sanguine of his recovery now than heretofore. Mrs. Fritz MAGERS died at the Home for the Friendless late Sunday afternoon. Her husband died about a week ago, but the fact was kept from her for a few days until she was considered strong enough to withstand the shock. On being informed of her husband's death, she seemed to gradually fail; until death relieved her. The funeral will take place from her daughter's, 816 Miami street, at 2 p.m. to-day. The friends of Mrs. S. T. MUNSON were shocked to hear of her death at an early hour yesterday morning. She had been sick since the first of July, but nothing serious was expected from her ailment. A post mortem examination was held, but the result was not learned. Besides her husband, Mrs. MUNSON left six children, all of whom reside in this city. She had lived a long time in Leavenworth and had a host of friends who deeply sympathize with the stricken family. The funeral will take place to-day from the family residence on Oak street and Broadway at 2 o'clock. The Maple Leaf authorities have been quietly buying up land in the vicinity of Seventh and Choctaw streets the past six weeks. They first bought a half block of Sheriff ROTHENBERGER for $3,000. The next purchase was a block immediately west of this, owned by A. TRACON, for $12,000, and yesterday they closed a deal with William DAVIS for the east half of his block, with improvements, for $12,000. These grounds are for sidetracks and freight depot purposes and settles beyond a doubt the fact of the entrance of this road via the new bridge. It will use the Burlington passenger depot. Great preparations are being made at the race grounds for the races that commence there to-morrow. The park managers were fined $10 yesterday by Judge CARROLL for selling liquors on the Sabbath at the park. Professor A. B. SILL has entered the canvass for the office of county superintendent, from High Prairie township. Mr. SILL is a competent man for the position. The Missouri Pacific pay car paid the boys off yesterday. (I have no connection with any of these families.) neirbo
Dear List Members, On Monday, December 23, I begin my Christmas Holiday week. I am spending it with my four children, their wives and husbands and my 9.5 grandchildren. It will be the first time in over 10 years I have had all my children with me for Christmas. I am thrilled to say the least. It is hard, as many of you know, when all of your children and grandchildren live thousands of miles from you. As you have already guessed, I will not be spending as much time as usual online watching over your list, but I will be back to full time on Tuesday, December 31st. I have also chosen not to have a list-sitter watch you while I am away. I really do not think you need one. I will be checking in each evening after the grandchildren and down for the day. If there is a problem which you think I need to address, send a personal message to me at [email protected] I will check those first thing each night. If off topic messages are sent or if suddenly someone calls for a Roll Call, please just let it pass. Just smile and remember what I would say and hit that delete button. I will take care of the problems for you as soon as I check in. I have the best lists on Rootsweb and the greatest members so I know you will be just fine. I wish for each of you and yours a special Holiday Season filled with love, friendship, friends and family. I thank each of you for your friendship and for your support this past year. You fill my my world. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

Young Harvey, with his little brother, were playing on the ice, when a large cake of their treacherous play-ground became detached and floated away from the shore. The boys screamed for aid, but there was no boat to send off after them, a colored man called to the boys to jump off into the river which they did. The colored man immediately sprang into the water to rescue the boys, but he only succeeded in rescuing one of them, Harvey being under the ice. The river was dragged until yesterday afternoon when the body was found, about twenty feet from where it sank under the water.
