    1. [KSLEAVEN] ROLL CALL--Margaret Dougan Long
    2. Alison Bigbee
    3. Hi, I have been a member of this list for a while but haven't posted anything in a while.....my Brick Wall in Leavenworth County are: My husband's 3x's ggrandmother, Margaret DOUGAN LONG (b. 1827 in Fayette County, PA, married Hiram Long in 1846 in Connellsville, Fayette County, PA, died 1873 in, I believe, Leavenworth County, KS.) I have located Margaret Long (age 43, b. PA) in the 1870 Stranger Township, Leavenworth County census living with her children George Oscar (age 22, b. PA), Georgiana Belle (age 20, b. PA), John (age 19, b. PA--My husband's ancestor), Joseph (age 17, b. PA), Hiram (age 13, b. PA), Maggie (Mary Margaret--age 7, b. PA), and William (age 5, b. KS). I have a copy of a family record that was written by Margaret Long's granddaughter that lists birth and death dates of Margaret Long, her husband, Hiram (who died in Fayette County, PA in 1865--Margaret and her children moved to Leavenworth County, KS after his death) and her children. I have proven! most of what is in the journal pertaining to Margaret Dougan Long and some of her children...... Margaret Long had a sister, Catharine Dougan Beck (b. 1833 Fayette county, PA, married Beverlin Beck by 1860 in Ft. Leavenworth, KS, died 1927 the Kansas Masonic Home, Wichita, KS.) Catharine Dougan Beck was a Civil War nurse at Ft. Leavenworth and is buried in Mt. Muncie Cemetary, Leavenworth, KS....but I find no trace of her sister, Margaret, buried there. I am looking for any information on the death and burial of Margaret Dougan Long....Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you for your time! Alison Bigbee

    1. [KSLEAVEN] My brick wall: Surface/Service in Leavenworth County
    2. Hello, List! I am searching for information on my great grandfather, Jacob Service. He lived in Stranger Township in 1880. His daughter, Rebecca J. Surface (change in spelling), married Lewis Long and lived in Delaware Township. Jacob's son's name was John. (Rebecca's daughter, Bertha, married Joseph Concannon, and they lived in Lansing, KS.) I have been unable to find any record of Jacob except in the 1880 census and would especially like to know where he died and is buried. Charlotte

    1. [KSLEAVEN] Leavenworth National Military Home, 1920
    2. Richard A. Pence
    3. I am seeking information on the following person, as given in the index to the 1920 U.S. Census on Ancestry.com January, John View Image Online Age: 74 Year: 1920 Birthplace: Tennessee Roll: T625_537 Race: White Page: 3A State: Kansas ED: 88 County: Leavenworth Image: 53 Township: National Military Home It appears from the above that this may have been a Federal institution? I presume, then, that the records are with the VA (if not, where?). Also, in looking around on the Net I say references to the Veterans Administration Center at Leavenworth. Is this the same as in the 1920 census records. About two weeks ago the newspapers carried the story that Gertrude January, widow of CW veteran John January died at her home in Tennessee. They were married when he was 81 and she 18 in 1927. His age and place of birth match those of the veteran above and I am trying to find out if the one in the 1920 census is the same man who married 7 years later in Tennessee! (I guess he was resting up for his pending marriage to an 18-year-old woman! <g>) Any advice of research paths appreciated. Regards, Richard A. 1. [KSLEAVEN] Fw: In Memoriam: Mrs. Col. LYNDE..
    2. Jim Laird
    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Laird To: Jim Laird Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2003 7:22 PM Subject: In Memoriam: Mrs. Col. LYNDE.. The Oskaloosa Times Friday July 3, 1896 In Memoriam. Last week we made a short mention of the death at Leavenworth of Mrs. Col. LYNDE, and as she was well known to all settlers of the Falls and vicinity we copy the following from the Kingfisher Times, edited by her son-in-law, J.A. MANN, who at one time lived on the quarter of land south of the Falls now owned by J.H. McNUTT: At Leavenworth, Kansas, Friday June 19th, Mrs. Margaret LYNDE, beloved wife of Col. Edward LYNDE, foermly commander of the 9th K.V.C., died. For nearly seven years she hand been an invalid, requiring the assistance of some helpful nurse or attendant, yet she bore with resignation and even cheerfulness the deprivations caused by paralysis. She was born in Chester county, Pa., in 1824, but removed with her father to Stark county, Ohio, while yet a child. She was married to Mr. LYNDE at Marlboro in 1843. This was their home, and here their three children, a daughter and two sons were born. In 1856 the family removed to Valley Falls, Jefferson county, Kansas, whre they resided until after the war, Mr. LYNDE meantime serving in several public capacities, including a Lieutenacy upon General Sturgis' staff then as organizer and commander of the 9th Kansas Cavalry, until his muster out in 1864. Mrs. LYNDE was his companion when possible and ever his devoted mate. She was ever chaita! ble, giving was her native trait and from the kindly spontaneity of her nature, her friends were many. She was buried at Mt. Muncie cemetery, Leavenworth, the services being conducted by a pastor of the Christian church, of which denomination she became a member in her early life. Peace to her memory.
