For those of you looking for obituaries of old soldiers. I am scanning the 1924 Leavenworth Times and find short obits for veterans from the old Soldiers' Home. Sometimes they are located in a section called "Soldiers' Home" and other times they are located in the "Local News" or in other places in the newspaper. None are the obits like we are used to now. You can order microfilm of the Leavenworth Times and other local newspapers from your local library through inter-library loan. The address I have is from 1991, so you might need to recheck the address. It is Kansas State Historical Society, 120 W 10th, Topeka KS 66612-1291 The old Soldiers' Home had a post office and it was National Military Home from 10 Jun 1886 to 1 Mar 1932, then it became the V A Home until 1 Mar 1936 when it became Wadsworth KS. Now I think it is part of the Leavenworth KS post office. At one time it had over 3500 veterans living there. Music concerts were held on the grounds and they had a huge globe on a pedestal planted with different flowers to form the all the countries. Martha Shearer in sunny So CA
I have just joined this list as I have discovered that a previously missing relative (EDWARD Timms) seems to have been in Leavenworth in two censuses - 1900 and 1920. I am hoping that someone will have access to a local directory and will be able to tell me if he appears therein. In the first census, he is a farm labourer. In the second, he is a wagon driver. Perhaps more importantly, in the 1900 census, it says that he came to the USA in 1881, so I am hoping that his father, also Edward Timms, might appear sometime around 1885 to 1890. Thanks to all in advance Roger Timms
Thanks in advance! And I hope you manage to stay dry. Sounds like the weather has been harsh out there. It has been here in Tennessee, too. I am searching for information on my gg grandfather, Michael Mack. I have a very slim reason to believe he may have lived the latter part of his life in Leavenworth Co. Here is what I know about him: He came to the U.S. from County Clare, Ireland in approximately 1868(?). He landed in NY and I believe he came alone since my grandmother wrote that he worked for a time to earn passage for his family to follow. He changed his name from McNamara to Mack after he came to the States. Later he was joined by his mother (name unknown) and six children: Annie (Leonard), Margaret (Redmond?), Bridget (McGlynn), Mary (Mulvey), Martin (who continued to use the family name of McNamara) and Henry Mack. His wife supposedly died before Michael made the trip. The family story is that she was accidentally shot by one of her daughters. The family was Catholic. Michael's son, Henry, is my great grandfather. I do know that Henry met and married my great grandmother, Ida Mae Ryan, in Leavenworth Co. on December 24, 1885. That's my only link to putting Michael in Leavenworth. Henry and Ida Mae later moved to Wyandotte Co. I have Henry's Intent for Naturalization papers. It says he came to the U.S. in 1868 from Queenstown, England. He was born in County Clare and landed in New York in 1868. He didn't know the name of the ship or what month he came in. I have also read in my grandmother's notes that he may have come to the U.S. in 1872, but have no official records to back that up. I am looking for anything at all about Michael's life. I can't find him on Federal Census records and or published Immigrant Ship Manifests. I did find a listing in the Kansas State Census. There are two Micheal Mack's listed. One is in 1 W (page 287) and the other in 3 W (page 402) on the 1870 Leavenworth Census at Ancestry.com. There are no links to the actual pages though. I would really like to have a copy of those if possible. I would also like to find a death date. He was probably buried in a Catholic Cemetery in either Leavenworth or Wyandotte Co. I did find a listing for Michael Mack at Ancestry.com in a Leavenworth Co. directory 1890-1893. In 1890 he is listed as a laborer and living at r615 Cheyenne In 1893 he is listed as a driver at the same address. Does anyone have access to these directories? Can you point me to an online map so I can find this address? Thanks for your interest! Kate Clabough
Dear Listers: I am hoping that someone on this list will be able to do a look up for me. I have addressed this message to several Lists and I apologize if you receive more than one of this message. This is my story: My grandmother Ethel LAWES b. 1887 in Ontario, Canada travelled to Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois about 1910 and stayed with her sister until she found a job. She was hired by the Fred Harvey Restaurant system which operated out of the Santa Fe Railroad line. As the story goes Fred Harvery hired women to be waitresses to prepare and serve meals to people who were travelling westward from the 1880's to 1950's. She was required to sign a contract stating that she would work for Fred Harvey and that during her contract that she could not marry, could not become pregnant. At the end of their contract the Railroad would take them where they wanted to be dropped off. My Grandfather Herbert Scott BOYER (s) born in Freedom, Owen Co., Indiana in 1882 supposedly was also hired by either the Railroad or the Fred Harvey Restaurant System. He also had signed a contract. Now these two people met while employed by Fred Harvey System or Santa Fe Railroad. At the end of their contract these two people supposedly married about March to June 1912. They travelled to Douglas, Cochise Co., Arizona where my father was born May 11, 1913. I found the home in which they were living, I also found a page from the City Directory of Douglas, Arizona showing that Herbert S. Boyer and Ethel Lawes Boyer (s) were living on 820 13th Street in Douglas. They also had an insurance policy on the home they were living in at the time. I also found out that Herbert was employed at the White House Cafe in Douglas, Arizona When my father was 10 months old my grandmother asked the local priest to take her to the train and make sure they got safely onto the train and left Douglas. She was taking my father and was going back to Inwood, Ontario, Canada where her family was living. She left my grandfather behind. He evidently wasn't a very good husband and father. He had extracurricular activites that were not conducive to a good marriage. My grandmother divorced him. Now Herbert returned home sometime later to his family in Freedom, Owen Co., Indiana where he lived the rest of his life. He married in 1931 to another woman and they had no children. He died in September 1960. My father died in October 1959 and my grandmother died in December 1962. I am looking for a marriage license for Herbert Scott Boyer (s) and Ethel Lawes. Herberts' birthdate was April 26, 1882 and my grandmothers' birth was May 16, 1887. Herberts' parents were William Scott Boyer(s) and Mary Elizabeth Perry. My grandmothers' parents were Henry Lawes and Emily Moore. According to one of Herbert's descendants Herbert never left home for more than two days in his whole life so he thinks I may have the wrong one but I have pictures of him and my grandmother together and my father listed Herbert as his father on his Social Security Application. I have not been able to find another Herbert Scott Boyer(s) born in that time frame anywhere. When I wrote Social Security I was given the information from my fathers application and this matches this Herbert Scott Boyer(s). If there is someone who could do a marriage lookup for me I would be most grateful as I have been looking for many years and I just came across the Santa Fe railroad map showing me where all of the train stations were between 1880 and 1950 and that is why I am writing this message in the hopes that I might be able to locate the marriage record. My grandmother also married a second time to a man from Dupage County, Illinois about 1916-1918 and I have not been able to locate that marriage record either. The second husbands name was William H. HAWBECKER. Thank you in advance for reading this long message and I hope someone is able to help me. Jean Payton [email protected]
Hello! I believe that Oren GOODALE listed in the Census in 1920 may be related to my Stephen A. GOODALE. Oren is 73 years and disabled but I don't find him buried in the cemetery listings. I do have an obit from Lyon Co., Ks. in 1926 for an Orian GOODALE but it doesn't give much information. It's possible this is the same person. Stephen lists his father as Orian/Orin so this may be an older brother? Stephen was b. in 1851 and according to age given Oren would have been born abt. 1847. I was wondering if records from Leavenworth Military Home go back to 1920 or if I should write somewhere else. In 1861 Oren would have been only abt. 13 yrs. old so he may not have joined the civil war til its end. I understand that it's now $40 to send off for military pension records; is it possible to find out whether this is my GOODALE family before investing that much money and if so I'd sure appreciate some pointers. Thanks for your time, Marie "My Reality Check bounced."

Searching for descendants of - or information on - a branch of my Murray family. Joseph Murry (Murray), born in Michigan (prob. Jackson County) about 1840. At some point as yet unknown, he married Annie (or Ada?? born Maine about 1847) and had son, George abt. 1868 who died a few years later. By 1880, they were living in King City/McPherson Co., Kansas and had twins, Mattie and Matson. In 1920 he was listed as living in Lansing, KS in his sister's obit.
