My great grandfather was supposedly in the Leavenworth Orphan's Assylum abt the yr of 1889 or 1900...however have never found any records of this. At one time I was directed to the Catholic Charities office in KC for info..which the woman there told me there were 2 Orphanages there that they had records for - One for White Children and One for Black. She checked her records...came up with nothing... Any other suggestions of where I can look? Thank you. P. 1. [KSLEAVEN] Death: Mrs. Agnes TOWNSEND..
    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Independent Saturday May 5, 1894 How Sudden. Mrs. Agnes TOWNSEND, to all appearances, was perfectly well and healthy up to six o'clock last Monday evening, but at seven she was a corpse. Her husband coming home, found her stretched upon the floor in the throes of death. Dr. THOMAS says it was fatty degeneration of the heart. Death to the old is natural and to be expected, but one so young, with such happy surroundings, a young mother, on whom a little sick baby was dependent, a daughter on whom an old father and mother doted, a young wife in whose existence a young husband was wrapped, ' tis almost strange she should be taken when she was so loved and so needed. Life is an unsolved mystery. That young boy, if he lives, in his waking and sleeping dreams will shout Momma a thousand times and will listen breathlessly for the reply that he will never hear. The husband will think and dream of his young wife and be with her in joy, only to awaken to realize the dread reality--she has gone. The strong, iron willed father is frenzied with grief for his child. ' Tis no wonder for it is one of the mysteries of life. She sleeps her last sleep, embalmed in flowers and in the hearts of those who love her as but few are loved.

    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Independent Saturday March 3, 1894 Death at the Old Ladies Rest. Mrs. Louis A. WALKER, aged 74, died last Wednesday at the old ladies rest. Her body, responsive to her wish, was taken to Lawrence for burial. The deceased came to Kansas in 1854 during the border troubles. Her first husband was G.W. BROWN, who published the Herald of Freedom, the first free state paper published in Kansas. It was published at Lawrence. The deceased passed through all the stirring scenes of those days and was brave as the bravest. There was stored in her memory a glorious history of those days. One by one those early settlers pass away, but it was glorious to have lived in and survived those days.
