Douglas County is south and adjacent to Leavenworth and the Kansas River runs to the north. It could be that both counties had adjacent District 38s or that the school was really in Douglas. On the off-chance that this could help you locate Virginia School, I am sending along. http://genealogytrails.com/kan/schools.html Also, the following large apple orchards are on the Kansas River and still in existence today. A relative taught there and her notes say it was just north of the Kansas River on a large (500 acre) apple orchard farm. There were less than 12 students during the early 1900s, when she taught there. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. My email address is mkat72@gmail.com if you want to write me and then I can send them to you personally instead of on this forum. Something else--on the 1875 Kansas State Census for Leavenworth, there is a listing for a "C. Chambers," (female) born about 1837 in Indiana, previously lived in Missouri, with three children, "A." , "E", and "E. J." The middle one was the only boy. Also in the household, M. W. Walsh (female) born in Indiana in 1826, previously lived in Missouri. Next door to this family is "L. Weber," (male) born 1838 in Ohio, previously lived in Missouri, and "N. Weber" (female) born about 1842 in Missouri, previously lived in Missouri. So is that Clarissa and Nancy living next door to each other in 1875 Leavenworth? Who is the Walsh woman? How interesting as another two sisters did head to CA with kids so makes sense. The 2nd newspaper you found with mention of a Mrs Weber. Where did you did you find these? I tried Newspapers.com and was trying for more hits but found nothing. Hoping to figure out for sure if its Nancy Scranton b.1842. She had been Nancy Brown for a bit. Not sure what happened but this Mrs.. Weber could also be a 2nd marriage for Mary J. Scranton Wells b. 1830 apprx. I'm thinking more like Nancy as I had not been able to find her. Maybe your newspaper source is better!!! I usually don't like Ancestry's newspapers searches but maybe it's better than I remember! I had seen her name as Rohana/Rohama on a couple of earlier censuses, but after 1880 she went by "Anna"--guess she was getting tired of people messing up her name. She and William H. Simpson had two boys, George and William. They moved out to California, appearing on the 1910 and 1920 censuses, but I believe Anna died the next year, on August 7, 1921 in Los Angeles Co. Unfortunately the record does not say where she is buried. William died March 30, 1925 in Los Angeles Co. Neither are listed on Findagrave. I've attached Norvell Tyler's death notice from the "Leavenworth Times" of July 2, 1887. Nothing you probably don't already know, but thought you might like to have it. I'm pretty sure this is Roxanna Scranton b. 1849 approx. in Cole Co., MO. If that's her, her parents were William & Emily Scranton. The mother Emily and sisters went to Leavenworth, KS by 1865 I think and settled in areas around there. The strange thing is they always get her name (Roxanna) wrong. I've been looking for her sister Nancy and what happens to her or Emily Scranton the mother for a long time. Just hoping to find vitals for marian names!! Or where they are buried!! Thank you so much I will now check into this other sister Mrs. Weber (as I thought Nancy Married a Brown, but maybe a first marriage! Thank you for your kindness can't tell you how thrilled I am!!! H. Simpson" appears to be someone named "Rohama Anna" or just "Anna," born 1849 in Missouri, depending on which census you find. There was an article in the Oskaloosa paper also saying that "Mrs. W. H. Simpson" was visiting her sister, a "Mrs. Weber," in Excelsior Springs, Mo., and that Mrs. Simpson went there several times, for both visiting and for the springs to improve her health. Some counties and cities did keep their own records locally, but I cannot find film for death records through the library in Topeka nor the LDS catalogue for the county or city of Leavenworth. There is, on Familysearch, a listing for a microfilm of funeral home records in Leavenworth--only one is within the time frame of Mrs. Primrose's death, the O'Donnell Funeral Home listings: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/986444?availability=Family History Library I also checked the "Leavenworth Times" for an obit from Sept. 24-Sept. 27 and did not find a mention of her. You might try contacting the office at Mt. Muncie to see if they still have the old ledgers--they often contain useful information. The number for the cemetery is (913) 727-1935 --hope there is someone there to answer the phone. So as not to leave you completely empty-handed I have attached what I believe is a mention of her illness. It was in the Sept. 1, 1899 issue of an Oskaloosa, Kansas newspaper.
