Brown, Co, F, 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry, died May 4, 1912 in Vancouver, Washington at age 79. He was absent on furlough from "A" Barracks when he died. In a 1901 article, it said that Cyrus M. Brown of "A" Barracks and two other "boys" from the home were going to Hot Springs, Arkansas on furlough. There was also listed a Cyrus M. Wells. I was hoping to find a census where Mary was living with him, but he may have died sometime between 1895 and 1900, either in Minnesota or somewhere between there and Montana. I find Anna C. Wells living in Billings, Montana on the 1900 and 1910 censuses, listed as widowed. The directories of that time list her as the widow of Jefferson D. Wells. Then in a 1925 directory she is in Tustin CA (also "widow of Jefferson D. Wells") and newspaper accounts describe her as going back and forth between there and Burlington, Iowa. On the 1930 she is living with her brother, Albert Klein, in Burlington, and she dies Feb. 5, 1933 and is buried in Burlington. I know you are not particularly interested in Anna Klein Wells, but for completeness' sake I wanted to go as far as possible with her. There was a discrepancy between the 1895 Moorhead, MN census and the 1900 Billings MT census--Anna's child in Minnesota was a boy, Carl--in Montana it was a girl, Cora. Both born about 1887 however. One of the enumerator's may have not understood the name and wrote it down incorrectly. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Two of Mary's other Scranton sisters die just before 1900, she might move by her sons. Mary j. scranton was married in Cole co. where both there families had settled 1840-1857. Then something happens to Scranton family (think dad dies or goes into Civil war. Then all the girls and mom move to Leavenworth, KS. Moving to Topeka wouldn't suprise me. I did find an article in a Topeka paper about a "Jefferson D. Wells" and an "Anna Klein" being married there on March 14, 1885. The article gave no ages but I found "J. D. Wells" and "Anna Wells" as a couple on the 1885 census in Topeka, both age 22--which is close to his age. He gave his birth state as Kansas and she as Iowa, although I thought the 1880 said he was born in Missouri, so still not sure it is your Jeff. However, on the 1895 Moorhead, MN I find Jefferson D. (born 1862 MO), Anna (born 1863 IA) and son Carl (born 1887 KS). How and why they were in MN I don't know. If you don't have access to those censuses, email me at my Gmail address-- mkat72 There were at least three "Jefferson D(avis) Wells" born in Missouri between 1860-1862, and two were in the Missouri death records, but neither gave the mother's maiden name as Scranton. I do realize Census records don't usually include a city someone is born in but have come across a few. But I think my POST was hoping for a OBIT/Death Record in Paper (which could lead to Vital record. I would need to narrow date down before paying for vital record. Because she has such a VERY common name for that area it has been hard to weed out. I have solved VERY tough brick walls with Newspaper obits!!! As for Vital Search I do not have Paid subscription so I can't see much. As for NEVER searching a married women by her married name, I disagree unless you are sending into an office for a specific record. I have NEVER found ANY of my SCRANTON women death records or for that matter any of my family by looking for their maiden names on death searches. I have put most of my families back together with newspapers and cross referencing them with vital records and year by year city directly timelines! Going WAY, WAY back! It certainly can help if for some reason they actually have a grave site they engrave but my poor relatives hardly had stones and so many cemeteries don't have much. You would not get far reseaching like that in SF, CA as all vital records were lost in 1906, the only way to search for relatives is Newspapers ( I have put four sides back to together using only Newspapers not many Vital Records. So in this city and in many you can't rely on Vital records with maiden names. I always use both that's why I put her maiden name in parentheses hoping a newspaper many have either of the names in a search. I will continue my search for an obit as I do have Census and city directories up to about 1890. I also will continue to try and find out where her kids move as this entire family scatters about this time because the mother of Mary Scranton Wells dies. Thanks for the information!
