    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dgoldy1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.johnson/751.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Michael Here is some information for you. Unfortunately I cannot find a death date or burial place for Catherine. Looking for documentation on the place and death date for Catherine has found nothing. This is due to several reasons. In the 1860 - 1861 time frame, Kansas was converting from a territory to a state. Johnson County was sparsely populated at the time. There may have been two cemeteries in existence then. Spring Hill Cemetery, which lists a founding date of 1860, and Campbell Cemetery. Spring Hill is on the south side of the county, and its southern border is also the county line. Shawnee is on the north side of the county, about 25 - 30 miles from Spring Hill. Campbell Cemetery is located in Merriam, which is just east of Shawnee today. Catherine Bancroft is not listed in the 1983 Johnson County Cemetery index, nor an updated on line index. If she was buried in the county, no headstone or marker exists today. Campbell Cemetery had one stone in it, commemorating two of the Campbell settlers. It was erected in 1940. It is unlikely that most of the early settlers buried in Campbell Cemetery had a permanent, engraved headstone. They were not readily available in 1860 - 1861. The published cemetery listings do not list any burials in Campbell Cemetery, other than the Campbell stone. You might want to contact the Kansas State Historical Society and see if they have any burial records for Campbell Cemetery. There web page is www.kshs.com. Once there, click on the RESEARCH link and send an email, asking if they have any records. Note that they will not search any listings they may have unless you pay a research fee in advance. There are no know death records for Johnson County. When the state was founded in 1861, it was the duty of the county clerk to keep death records. Very few did. IN 1911 the State of Kansas assumed this duty. Additionally, no newspapers were published in Johnson County in the 1860s. The results are no death certificate and no obituary for Catherine. Here is what I did find..... There are several folks who have posted family data on Lineaus and his family on WorldConnect. You can find a link to WorldConnect from the rootsweb.com home page. Try this database, welscho11  and while you are looking at it, click on the link at the top of the page for home page of The Jim and Donna Welsh Family. Look deep enough and you will find additional information on Lineaus and Sarah Bancroft and their childern. The first item that fell out of this search is that all these folks list Catherine's surname as MUNTAREGA. So when you get to the WorldConnect home page, search on Catherine MUNTAREGA. The documentation in these listing is scarce and few if any sources are cited. My impression is that one individual posted the data and the others copied it, incorporating it into their listings. For the Federal Census of 1860, Film M653, Roll 350, page 478, line 15 for the Town of Shawnee in Johnson County, Kansas, enumerated on August 19, 1860 you will find the listing for Lineaus. Both Catherine and Lineaus are listed as 27 years of age, with two children , Mary and William. Lineaus' occupation was "Carpenter". This age listing implies that Catherine was born in 1833, not 1840 as most of the on line listings indicate. >From a published index of Johnson County Marriages, 1855 - 1905, the following marriages are listed: Page 5... Bancroft, L H & McKenzie, Elizabeth, Nov 17, 1861 by W. B Maupin, JP. This is listed in Book A, no record number listed. Bancroft, Linleaus H, 39, Kinsey, Sarah M, 20, in Olathe by B. P. Notermen, PJ on Feb 27, 1872, listed in Book C, Record 096 On page 32 Everett, A J, 25, Bancroft, Mary T, 21 in Olathe by J. Biddison, Min., on June 23, 1876, listed in Book C, Record 299. On page 86, Quarles, M H, 47, Olathe, KS, Everett, Mrs. Mary T, 37, Olathe, KS in Olathe at the the PJ office by William Henry, PJ on Sept 26, 1892, listed in Book F, Record 043. You can also find these records on line by visiting this link http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/johnson/index.html and then clicking on the "Marriages" link. While you are there, also take a look at the Divorce records. You will find that Elizabeth filed for divorce from Lineaus in late 1871. Copy down the case information, as you can get a copy of the record. To get photocopies of the marriage records and the divorce case, send an email to the Johnson County archivists at http://archives.jocogov.org/default.htm . Use the Email link at the bottom of the page. Ask what the current cost for photocopying the records is. It was $0.25 per page several years ago. You will need to pay in advance, so you will need to have them tell you how many pages are in the divorce file. Send the payment and a SASE to them and they will return the photocopies to you. Now, on to the cemetery listings. From the Johnson County Cemetery Index, published in 1983 by the Johnson County Genealogical Society... On page 239, in the Olathe Cemetery Remsberg, Jenie Bancroft, b.. Oct 22 1974 d. Jan 29, 1947 (sic) {I think this may be one of Lineaus and Sarah's daughters, likely born in 1874, verify the birth date on the photo of the headstone} McMullin, Medora, b. 1879 d. 1936 {Assumed to be another daughter} Bancroft, Sarah M b. 1851 d. 1937 Bancroft, L. H. Co. B 15KS CAV {died in July 1907, with obituary published on July 18, 1907} Bancroft, Clara E., b. Feb 18, 1877 d. Aug 6, 1897 On page 342, in the Olathe Cemetery Everett, Ethel Thorp, b. 1849 d. 1916 Everett, Howard Haskell, d. 1882 Everett, Andrew J, b 1850 d. 1892 {death date is Apr 16, 1892 at the age of 42, from obituary index} Mary T. b. 1855 d. 1939. M H Quarles is also buried in the Olathe Cemetery. His first name is Marcus. He died on July 7, 1913 at the age of 67. He is buried with his first wife, Martha. If you visit this link, www.cemetery.cottonhills.com, you will find an on line transcription of each cemetery in the county, along with digital photos of each headstone. I think you can download the photos by right clicking on the photo and saving it to your computer. The webmaster, Linda also knows how to request information for the Olathe cemetery. You must go through her. Send her an email and see if you can get a burial date for Mary T. Also request any other information the cemetery may have in it records, especially her surname when she died and where she lived. Then we may be able to find an obituary for Mary. Obituaries: The Johnson County Library has an on line obituary index. You can search it at this link.... http://www.jocolibrary.org/default.aspx?id=2168 Pick the Obituary Tab in the lower left side of the page and change the search type in the drop down box to surname, enter your surname of interest and the results will appear. In the results page, click on the more info link to see how to get a copy of the obituary. This index consists of two main portions. The first portion is for Johnson County residents having an obituary published in the Kansas City, MO TIMES or STAR newspapers. It begins in 1976-77 and runs through today. (Note that the last week or so may not be posted yet,but it seems to get there pretty quickly.) This portion of the index also includes obituaries published in a few of the county newspapers for the same time frame. The second portion consists of obituaries published in the county newspapers. It originally consisted three newspapers for the period of 1920 to 1960. It is being expanded backwards in time and additional newspapers are being added. You will find listings for Andrew J. Everett, L.H Bancroft and Marcus H. Quarles, along with other individuals with the same surname. You will find two listing in the Obituary Index for Lineaus. One if for the "Olathe Register" and the other is for the "Lenexa News". The item in the "Lenexa New" is just a 4 line death notice. The obituary in the "Olathe Register" makes no mention of Lineaus' first two wives, his daughter Mary T., or his son William. It only list his last wife and their surviving children. Of interest on the same page and over two columns is a story about a "Col. Marcus H Quarles, of KY who is in the county for a speaking engagement. This is the same Marcus Quarles who married Mary T. However, she is not directly named in the story. It only states that they were both former residents of Johnson County, currently living in Somerset, Paulski(?) County, KY. Marcus moved back to Stanley, Johnson County before he died. His obituary states that he was married twice and that both wives preceded him in death. Odd that he died in 1913 and Mart. T. his second wife has a 1939 death date listed on her tombstone. I did not find either Marcus or Mary in the 1900 Federal Census. However a M. H. Quarles is listed in the 1910 Federal Census for Somerset, Paulski(?) County, KY. I could not find a Mary or Mary T Quarles in the 1910 Federal Census. So I wonder if Mary divorced Marcus prior to 1910. The State of Missouri now has an on line database of death certificates. Search at this link. http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/ You will find certificates for Sarah Bancroft, Lineaus' third wife, his son William, and I think William's wife Mary Ellen. Sarah died in Jasper County and William and Mary Ellen died in Jackson County. Dave Goldy Overland Park, KS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
