He was born in Cainsville, Mo., and had lived in this area 12 years. Mr. Smothers was a welder 36 years before retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Overland Park Christian Church. Mr. Smothers leaves his wife, Mrs. Colleen Smothers, and a son, Jerry L. Smothers, both of the home; another son, Guy E. Smothers, Macks Creek, MO.; a brother, Albert Smothers, Gravois, Mo.; four sisters, Mrs. Blanch Sanders, Mrs. Tessie Phillips and Mrs. Pearl Crouse, all of Kansas City, and Mrs. Bessie Meinecke, Cainsville, and six grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Newcomer Overland Park Chapel; burial in the Johnson County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from to 6 to 8 o'clock to night at the chapel. >From "The Kansas City TIMES", Friday, July 21, 1989, Vol. 121, No. 272, page B-4, column 5 Colleen Doris Smothers, 60, Overland Park, died July 19, 1989, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital. She was a lifelong area resident. Survivors include a son, Jerry Smothers, Overland Park and her mother, Marjorie Shivers of the home. Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m., today at Newcomer's Overland Park Chapel; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society. >From "The Kansas City STAR", Thursday, February 10, 2000, Vol. 120, No, 146, page B5, column 5 Marjorie Shivers, 90, Shawnee, KS, passed away February 4, 2000, at Trinity Lutheran Manor. Cremation (Arrangements: Cremation Society of Kansas City) Shawnee Mission Hospital is now know as Shawnee Mission Medical Center and is located in Mission, Johnson County, KS. It is still in business. Trinity Lutheran Hospital was located in Kansas City, Jackson County, MO. It is now out of business. Trinity Lutheran Manor is located in Merriam, Johnson County, Kansas. C. L. Smothers and Colleen McCollum were married in Johnson County, Kansas in 1958. Application date for the license was August 8, 1958. Search here: http://www.jococourts.org/ There also is a marriage in Johnson County, KS, between Charles E Shivers (Junior) and Vera Marjori McCollum in 1946. The license application date was December 24, 1946. This Charles (Junior) also had a marriage in 1929 to A. Martha Bentrup. A local note: There is no city by the name of Shawnee Mission, KS. It started out as a postal delivery area and covers the northeast corner of Johnson County. It includes the cities of Shawnee, Mission, Merriam, Overland Park, Lenexa, Leawood, Prairie Village and a number of other small cities. It includes all postal deliver zones with a zip code of 662xx I believe Jerry L Smothers still lives in the Overland Park area. However he appears to have an unlisted phone number.
