I've not had good experiences with the KSHS. 2 years ago I sent the $25 fee and asked them for a copy of George W. Wheeler's enlistment paper for the Union Army (enlisted 16 Aug. 1862 in Olathe, Ks. in Comp. H, 12th. Kansas Volunteer Infantry). I wanted to get his birthplace in Ky. which is usually listed on those. The man who responded checked several other records (like the 1865 census) that I didn't ask for, but didn't check for the enlistment paper. I emailed him and told him this but got no response.
