The Johnson County Central Resource library volunteers usually will do looks up if requested. However the library's newspaper microfilm collection only goes back to 1879. Do you have an LDH Family History Center in your area? They also can get the newspaper microfilms form KSHS. They do charge a small film rental fee. For George's obituary, or more likely a death notice, try the the Leavenworth, KS Public Library. They have the Leavenworth County newspaper microfilms. They have a web page. They also charge a research fee. the last time I looked a few years ago it was $25. per hour in advance. I've not had good experiences with the KSHS. 2 years ago I sent the $25 fee and asked them for a copy of George W. Wheeler's enlistment paper for the Union Army (enlisted 16 Aug. 1862 in Olathe, Ks. in Comp. H, 12th. Kansas Volunteer Infantry). I wanted to get his birthplace in Ky. which is usually listed on those. The man who responded checked several other records (like the 1865 census) that I didn't ask for, but didn't check for the enlistment paper. I emailed him and told him this but got no response. I then emailed the head of that dept. of the Lib. but again got no response. I gave up. Steve Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: dgoldy1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.johnson/769.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Finding an obituary for either person in that time frame in Johnson County is very unlikely. One paper was published in Olathe during that time frame and your local librarian can inter-library loan the microfilms. These films can also be ordered through your local LDS Family History Center. Here is a link to the database search page at the Kansas State Historical Society. Your can only search for the microfilm numbers here. The films for that time frame are somewhat incomplete and the image quality is poor to unreadable. I have never found a published obituary in the paper for the 1860 time period. Each weekly edition was usually only one or tow pages and personal news was rarely reported. You might get lucky and look at the Leavenworth County papers fro an obituary or death notice for George. To search, just enter the county name and the time period of interest. Don't bother with the city. http://www.kshs.org/library/news.htm Also take a look at the link on the search page to the KSHS ILL policies. 3. I am searching for anyone who knows about Jacob and Sarah Studebaker. In 1870 they lived in Willow Springs TWP in Douglas Co., KS and in 1880 they lived in in McCamish twp., in Johnson County. They had a girl living with them by the name of Ella Sowers, somtimes referred to as Ellen Sours. She was my Dad's aunt. She was left in Kansas with the Studebakers when the family headed back to Virginia ab out oct 1865. Her father died near Louisville, KY on the way back to VA. Am looking for any Studebakers who might have pictures and or information aout her before she married a Phillip Ensminger in Mar 1884. Also would like to find out if any of the Studebakers know any thing of her brother Samuel who died in Aug 1862 some where here in KS. I can to limited travel as am 79 and am not financially able to travel too far.
