Author: dgoldy1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.johnson/817.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: For the obituaries in Shawnee County check this link http://tscpl.org/blog/local-history/ Look at the Obituary Request Form link to see the conditions and costs. Also you can search their obituary index to see if the folks you are looking for have been indexed yet. Look in the links below the Obituary Request Form link. As for the Kansas State Historical Society, have you investigated using their newspaper microfilm interlibrary loan to your local library???? Check with your librarian as your local library may have a fee associated with this service. Note that the Topeka papers are daily, so you could do quite a bit a searching if you do not have exact death dates. This microfilms are also available at your local LDS Family History center. However there is a rental charge per film at the Family History centers. Dave Goldy Overland Park, KS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: dgoldy1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.johnson/817.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Search on this page at the Johnson County, Kansas Library... http://www.jocolibrary.org/default.aspx?id=2168&epslanguage=EN This is an index listing only, not the obituary. Both Leon and his son Donald are in the index. This surname has a large number of listings, so do a full name search. Once you find the name, click on the icon associated with it and verify the full name and dates. Then on the same page, click the link to request a copy of the obituary. I looked though the one line cemetery listings and neither of these fellows were listed. This on line index is about 5 years old now. 1. [KSJOHNSO] New research site for Johnson County
    2. Sheryl McClure
    3. Hello everyone-- As part of my "Kansas History and Heritage Project," I have created a website for Johnson County: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ksjohnhp/index.html Included on the site is the following data: ~ under "Directories": 1867-68 Business Directory ~ under "History": 1859 registered voters, Olathe Twp. ~ under "Census": 1875 Kansas State Census, Shawnee Twp., Surname Index and Census Images ~ under "History": County Officials, 1861-1914 ~ under "Military": 1894 G.A.R. posts and rosters ~ under "Census": 1865 Kansas State Census, Aubry Twp., Surname Index and Census Images ~ under "Biographies": 103 bios from "History of Johnson County," 1915 ~ under "Schools": Olathe High School Class of 1921 photos ~ under "History": "Old Settlers' Association," 1907 registrants ~ under "Military": "Fifty Years After", sketches of Civil War vets from Olathe in 1911 ~ under "Schools": 1886 School Clerks ~ under "Obituaries": Over 150 obits added, most between 1896-1922 ~ under "History": 1876 history ~ under "Directories": 1874 Index and Business Directory ~ under "Schools": 1912 List of Teachers in Accredited Schools ~ under "Family Files": 1907 Reunion of Dr. William Smith descendants ~ under "Military": 1914 Olathe G.A.R. roster As you can see, there is not a whole lot of information on the site at this time, but I plan to add more data in the coming months. Also, be sure to check out my "Online Counties" page to see if I have a website for your other Kansas counties of interest. If you have any family histories, obits, documents etc., that you would like to see on the site, I will be happy to add it. I try not to duplicate information that has already been transcribed on other websites, and I always check projects such as Kansas Genealogy Trails and Kansas USGenWeb to make sure that the data I am adding is not already transcribed and on a website. This website features a search engine, but I strongly urge you to browse the data, as some of the spelling of surnames is questionable. Johnson is the 69th county in this project--only 36 counties to go! I hope to have all Kansas counties online within the next two years, but until I can gather enough data for a specific county, I will store the files for that county on the state website: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kahhp/index.html This website houses also statewide information (such as maps, military histories, college files, etc.) as well as serving as a repository for data for the "orphan" counties, and links to counties that do have their own sites. Thanks, Sheryl
