Author: dgoldy1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.johnson/742.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Kristina Here are the newspaper articles I found regarding this accident. Based on the Polk City directories for Kansas City, MO., Marie lived in Kansas City in 1971 and 1972. She may have lived there earlier, but I did not check further back. Bulletin An 83 year old pedestrian died this afternoon after she was struck by a car about 9 a.m. Today at 39th and Main. Mrs. Marie Hogan, 15 W. 28th, died at St. Mary's Hospital after she suffered chest and back injuries. The Kansas City STAR, Monday, March 6, 1972, Vol. 92, No. 171, page 3, column 1 ************************** Cause of Death, Wind or Truck? The police will determine today whether to count the death of Mrs. Marie Hogan, 83 years old, of 15 W. 38th, as a traffic fatality. She died yesterday after being struck by a truck at 39th and Main. She was hit by a Southwestern Bell Telephone Company truck driven north on Main by Howard W. Purinton, 26, of Blue Springs, who was turning right onto 39th. Witnesses said Mrs. Hogan, who was standing on the southeast corner of the intersection, stepped off the curb but immediately stepped back as the truck approached. They said a gust of wind apparently blew Mrs. Hogan off the curb and into the path of the truck. Officers said the woman weighed 80 pounds. Capt. Robert McKinney, of the accident investigation unit, said the question is whether the death was caused by the wind or by the truck. According to the standards of the national Safety Council, if the wind was of gale force or stronger, the death should be listed as due to an act of God, not traffic. The police were to call the National Weather Service to find the wind speed at the time of the accident, 9 a. m. yesterday. The weather bureau said last night that the official reading at 9 a. m. was a wind from the southwest at 17 miles an hour, gusting to 20 miles an hour. However, a meteorologist said, terrain and buildings affect wind speed and buildings can cause a funnel effect. Also, he said, in gusty winds, the wind velocity can vary greatly with location. The Kansas City TIMES, Tuesday, March 7, 1972, Vol. 104, No. 109, page 8, column 5 ********************** Hogan - Services for Mrs. Marie Hogan, of 15 W 38th St. will be held 1 o'clock Friday at the Mount Moriah Funeral Home; interment will follow in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Mount Moriah Funeral Home Holmes at 105th, WI 2-2004 The Kansas City TIMES, Thursday, March 9, 1972, Vol. 104, No. 158, page 7D, column 5 I did not find an obituary for Marie, just the above "Death/Funeral Notice" Contact information for Mount Moriah is Mount Moriah Funeral Home 10507 Holmes Road Kansas City, MO 64131 816-942-2004 Dave Goldy Overland Park, KS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dgoldy1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.johnson/742.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Kristina I found some information on the accident today at the library. However, the library closed before I could find the obituary. It appears that the funeral (and obituary) was delayed for a few days, until a cause for the death could be determined. Apparently, on the day of the accident, there were high winds in the KC area. The police wanted to determine if high winds were the cause of death or the vehicle that hit her was the cause of death. She was struck about 9 am and died about 3 pm on March 6th. She was struck at 39th St and Main Street and died in St. Mary's hospital, both in Kansas City, MO. It is unclear if she stepped into the path of a telephone service truck turning right or if the WIND blew her off the curb into the truck. The article I did find indicates that she only weighed 80 pounds. It also states that she lived in Kansas City, MO not Overland Park, KS. I will take a look in the city directories and phone books to see if I can figure out which city she lived in. As for your problem, I think you were the victim of a poorly laid out web page. The library pays for access to several on line data bases for its patrons to search. You need to have a library card to access those databases, which is what you were trying to to do. In any event, had you found the correct link, the free data base, you would not have found Marie's obituary listed. She died 4 years before the obituary index was started. This link will take you to the library web page you were on... http://www.jocolibrary.org/default.aspx?id=2168 If you go there and click on OBITUARIES in the top right tab of the box instead of the link to "America's Obituaries and Death Notices" in the box, you will get to the free index of Obituaries of Johnson County Residents who had an Obituary published in either the Kansas City TIMES or Kansas City STAR newspapers, from 1977 thorough today. I will continue the search for Marie's obituary the next time I go to the library. Dave Goldy Overland Park, KS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. One way is to right-click on the link and select SAVE TARGET AS or SAVE LINK AS and then make up a file name to save it onto your hard drive. Then open your genealogy software, open a new folder, and in the FILE menu, select IMPORT and import the same file into your genealogy software.
