    3. The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Sudden Death of Gene Allen. Tuesday morning early Gene ALLEN was found dead in the home of his brother, Samuel Allen, in this city, where he had called the afternoon before. He was lying in the hall at the foot of the stairs where he had lain all night with his clothes on, dead and cold. It was known that he was there early the evening, before, in a stupor, but it was supposed that he would soon sleep it off and go home, or take care of himself. Dr. Lowry was called and after viewing the body called an inquest in the afternoon. County Attorney WORSWICK accompanied by Sheriff RILEY, came over from Oskaloosa to conduct the inquiry. After the examination of half a dozen witnesses the jury, composed of Neil McLEOD, Will ONEAL, H.H. MITCHELL, Elmer LEWIS, J.E. TUTT and Sam CONNELL, found that death was caused by heart failure. James Eugene Allen, one of ten children born to Ricahrd and Malinda Allen, was born June 29, 1868 on a farm on Brush Creek east of Valley Falls, and died in that city December 19, 1910, aged 42 years, 5 months and 20 days. Gene was never married. Valley Falls has always been his home. He is survived by his aged mother, four brothers, LIvy, Chris, Samuel and Ebert, and two sisters, Mrs. Bud HOGAN and Mrs. Albert ROSE. The funeral was held from the home of his brother Samuel Thursday at 10 o'clock, Rev. H.R. Murphy officiating the services. The burial wa in Farrar Cemetery.
