The McLouth Times Friday August 19, 1949 Lt. Don Kimmel Commissioned In Guard. The Nebraska Air National Guard has commissioned Don C. KIMMEL, 30, 645 North Thirtieth street, as a second lieutenant. Lt. Kimmel, who was formerly an assistant in the 173rd fighter squadron, is the first enlisted man to be commissioned in the Nebraska air guard. Under guard regulations an enlisted man having good qualities of leadership, obtaining the recommendation of a senior officer, passing a test for a commission given by the regular army, and gaining approval of an examining board of officers, may be commissioned. Lt. Kimmel's commission became effective July 31 but must be given final approval by the National Guard bureau in Washington. The officer enlisted in the air guard in December, 1946, and has had a perfect attendance record. Since March as a commissioned officer, he has had charge of the basic training for all new members. During the war Lt. Kimmel served at a boatswain's mate second class in the United State Coast Guard from March 1942 until October 1945. The greater part of his service was aboard the cutter U.S.S. Sweetgum. Taken from Lincoln, Nebraska Star. Lt. Kimmel is the son of former Probate Judge and Mrs. Claude Kimmel. He was graduated last January from the University of Nebraska, and is employed as first salesman with the Ford agency in Lincoln.
