Gen. Soc. obit file. However, found the following of R. P. Beeler. Unfortunately it sounds like an major mental health problem, but may explain why we don't find tombstone record for him. We do learn his date of death as 15 Oct. 1893. The Oskaloosa Independent, 21 Oct.1893 TOPEKA, KAS., Oct. 15.--R. P. Beeler, an old citizen of North Topeka, committed suicide this morning by shooting himself with a shotgun. It is presumed that his mind was unbalanced, as no direct cause can be assigned for his act. he prepared deliberately for his act by tying a string tothe leg of the kitchen stove and attaching it to the trigger of the gun. Then throwing himself at full length on the floor, he pulled the gun towards him, receiving the entire contents of the barrel in his breast and expiring instantly. He was 85 years old and had been married four times. Mr. Beeler lived in Kaw twp., this county, for a great many years, and had many friends who will be pained to hear of the above. [The 2nd paragraph appears in different type and was obviously added by the editor of the Oskaloosa Independent.] There is also a note on the death record card of Elizabeth Beeler that she is buried in "Old Grantville" cemetery. It is near the main cemetery NW of Grantville, but the old part is SW of the intersection of roads where the new cem. is NE of that intersection. Since he died in Topeka, there might be a record of his death in a Topeka newspaper. Richard P. Beeler, was an "original land-owner" in Jefferson Co. when he purchased at land auction the NE partial quarter of section 1, twp. 11, range 16 of 111 acres on 28 July 1857 at $1.50 per acre. R. P. Beeler appears on the 1880 and 1885 census records as living in Jefferson Co., so he had not lived in the Topeka more than 8 years.
