    3. The Valley Falls New Era Thursday August 25, 1910 Bit By a Rattler. (From the Jefferson Co. Tribune.) Sam JOHNSON, who lives west of town, was bitten on the middle finger of his right hand by a large rattle snake last Friday evening. He had been putting his horses in the pasture and had thrown halters in the grass near the gate. When he was ready to go to the house he stooped to get the halters and as he raised them up he felt a sting in his finger, but thought at the time it was a thorn. When he started to the gate he saw two snakes in the grass near where the halters were and killed them and was placing them in the road to fool the boys when his finger, began to pain and he examined it and found that it was swelling and turning black. When he arrived at the house he had his boy telephone Dr. McCreight who told them what to do and started out. Upon arriving the doctor found that they had tied a string around his finger to stop the circulation and gave Johnson plenty of whiskey. The doctor dressed the wound and Johnson was able to be in town Tuesday.
