    3. The Oskaloosa Times Jefferson County Friday June 9, 1899 A Disasterious Fire. About 3 a.m. Tuesday morning the quietness of our peacefully slumbering city was disturbed by that dread alarm--the fire bell. The fire department and a large number of our citizens turned out and hastened to the fire, which was just across the street from the Times office, in Mel CRITCHFIELD's stable. The fire, had, however, gained such headway that it could not be checked, and the stable was burned to the ground. Three buggies, two horses and several sets of harness were burned as well as the grain and hay. The cause of the fire is unknown, though it is thought to have been accidental. Los abotu $1,500, insurance $800. M.L. Critchfield showed his appreciation of the work done by the fire department by presenting the boy with a box of cigars.
