The Valley Falls New Era Thursday March 31, 1910 Jefferson Farmer Badly Beaten Up. Flo Thompson Arrested and Charged With the Assault. Capital. Deputy Sheriff JUDKINS late yesterday afternoon arrested Flo THOMPSON on a charge of assaulting John HARPER, a farmer from Jefferson county, in what is alleged to be a joint in North Topeka. The assault occurred Sunday night, and when Harper appeared at the sheriff's office yesterday afternoon his face was literally beaten to a pulp. Both eyes were cut and blackened, his nose almost broken and he complained of other injuries about the body. According to the story by Harper, he came to Topeka Sunday night, and was walking west on Curtis stret, North Topeka. When passing a house in the rear of a restaurant on Curtis street he was accosted by a man and invited to come in a house where he said a numbr of the men were shooting craps and drinking. He admitted that he bought a drink or town and then started to leave, as he said he did not care to remain with the crowd. The last thing he remembers is that he was suddenly knocked down, kicked and beaten unmercifully and about $8 in money taken from his pockets. He could not identify his assailant, but Frank BOWMAN, who the old man alleges was with him, knew the man as Flo THOMPSON. Harper said he thought the gang believed he had considerable money on his person, as they told him they were going to have what money he had. Harper owns considerable property in this part of the county, and made the trip to dispose of some land. WHen the matter was reported to Sheriff NORTON he immediately ordered an investigation, and the arrest of Thompson followed. He was released under bonds to appear this morning to answer to the charge.
