    3. The Meriden Message Jefferson County Friday January 23, 1931 Mrs. Mary C. REAM, 92, died at her home, northeast of Topeka, at 8 o'clock Tuesday night. She is survived by a son, R.K. Ream, of the home address; a daughter, Mrs. Maude PECK, Meriden; four grandchildren, Mrs. Clarence OTTO, Hamilton, Mo.; Mrs. Nell POLLOM, Mrs. Stella NEWELL and Miss Kathryn PECK, of North Topeka, and five great-grandchildren.

    3. The Meriden Message Jefferson County Friday January 9, 1931 Wm. Langdon Victim Of Lockjaw From Small Wound. William LANGDON, 27, died at Bell Memorial hospital at Kansas City, last Monday morning, a victim of tenanus. Several days previous to his death he cut his hand slightly with a rusty knife while sharpening an axe. Paying no attention to the small wound he found infection had suddenly set in, and lockjaw resulted. He was taken to the hospital but in spite of all efforts he died Monday morning. His death is the third in the Langdon family in the last year and a half. Tragedy first struck the Langdons in May, 1929, when Jewell Langdon, 16, a sister, died from pneumonia. In December, 1929, the father, O.E. Langdon, contracted pneumonia and died Dec. 20th. William's death makes the third. He has been living on the home place, three miles northwest of Oskaloosa, with his mother, farming. Funeral services were held at Dunavant church, conducted by Rev. C.Cray Jones, Methodist pastor at Oskaloosa. Burial was in Spring Grove cemetery.

    3. The Meriden Message Friday January 9, 1931 Ozawkie. Miss Evelyn HYSTEN underwent an operation for appendicitis at St. Francis hospital Wednesday morning. Mr. DAVIS and children are visiting with her sister, Mrs. Ellen PUDERBAUGH and family. Mrs. Mary KRAMER is reported quite ill at this writing. Mr. Zelma SMITH returned to her home in Nevada, Mo., last Thursday. Her mother, Mrs. R. E. METZGER and Mrs. Eva METZGER accompanied her home. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse PATTERSON have moved to the home of her father. Mr. John ROOT and are at home to their friends. Mrs. S.A. METZGER visited th past week with relatives in Valley Falls.

    3. The Meriden Message Jefferson County Friday January 9, 1931 Lorene Lois, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe STONER, was born, Dec. 28, 1930 and passed away Jan. 1, 1931. Funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Rev. Strode, pastor of the Christian church. Two songs were sung by Mrs. Durnberger and Regine Hines. The body was laid to rest in the Meriden cemetery.

The Meriden Message Jefferson County Friday January 9, 1931 Margaret Caloline BECKER was born Jan. 30, 1864, near Marietta, Ohio, and departed this life, Dec. 31., 1930, aged 66 years, 11 months and 1 day. She was united in marriage to John W. BERG on Nov. 19, 1885, at Marietta and came with her husband to Kansas, March 4, 1886, to settle in the vicinity of Meriden, living in this community the remainder of her life. She leaves her husband, John W. Berg; three daughters, Carrie K. Berg, Topeka; Mrs. Anna M. TRIPP, Mountain View, Wyo., and Mrs. Ellen F. BOWEN, Meriden; thirteen grandchildren; two brothers, Chas. A. Becker, Garden City, and William Becker, Marietta, O., and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Berg, Newport, O., to mourn her loss. She was confirmed in the German Lutheran church in her fourteenth year, and transferred her membership along with her husband's eleven years ago to the Meriden U.B. Church. She was a good wife, a kind mother, and faithful to the church, taking her part in its various activities. She was a member of the O.E.S. Meriden Chapter No. 399. She has gone from us but the fragrance of her life lives on. The grave cannot obliterate it. Time will not dime these fragrant memories but rather will add to their lustre. The funeral was held at the United Brethren Church and services conducted by her pastor, Rev. David Wood. Card of Thanks. We wish to express our appreciation for the sympathy and assistance of our neighbors and friends in the sickness and death of our wife and mother: also thank the ministers for their comforting work, the O.E.S. for their services and the many friends and relatives for their beautiful floral offerings.     3. The Nortonville News Jefferson County Friday May 8, 1942 Canonica--Greene. From Valley Falls Vindicator. Miss Kathryn Alice CANONICA and Ira Frank GREENE, both of Jackson, Calif., were married in Reno, Nev., March 30. They were attended by Miss Angeline SUCICH of Jackson and were accompanied as far as Sacramento on the homeward trip by Mr. and Mrs. Donald MESSINGER of Oakland. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Canonica of Jackson and is a very popular member of the Young People Society there. She was vice president of the B.T. Association and publicity manager of the Mt. Girls. Mrs. Greene has taken part in several plays and benefits for the welfare of people in Jackson and throughout Amador county, Calif. She attended the Jackson schools. Mr. Greene is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Greene of Valley Falls. He was graduated from the Valley Falls high school in 1939. While in school he was very active in athletics. He has been in California for some time and for the past year has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Harold BECK of Jackson. Mr. Greene left two weeks ago for induction into military service and is now located at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Mrs. Greene is making her home for the present with her sister and husband in San Francisco. (Ira was born at Nortonville and is a nephew of Mrs. Herman BABCOCK.)

    3. The Nortonville News Jefferson County Friday May 8, 1942 Sudden Death. Dick HAINES and Cora went to Winchester yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral of their cousin's wife, Mrs. Phinn SHUGART, 68, who died suddenly Monday evening at her home, three miles north of Winchester. She is survived by her husband, four sons, and one daughter. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church and burial was in the R.P. cemetery.

    3. The Nortonville News Jefferson County Friday May 8, 1942 Died In California. Kenneth HURLEY received word of the death of his father, Alvin Hurley, who died April 29 in a veterans hospital near Los Angeles from tumor of the throat. Kenneth visited his father when they were in California last summer and he was apparently well. Kenneth's brothers, Bernard of San Diego and Orville of Oakland, were with him when he died. They also have a sister, Lucile of Topeka. Alvin was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Hurley and was born in Humboldt, Nebr.

    3. The Nortonville News Jefferson County Friday May 8, 1942 Katherine Irene, daughter of Mrs. Alice McDERMOND and the late J.T. McDermond, was born in Winchester, Kan., May 24, 1891, and departed this life at her home near Winchester, April 30, 1942, aged 50 years, eleven months and six days. Her departure was sudden following a cerebral hemorrhage. She was preceded in death by her father, John McDermond, an infant brother, John T., Jr., and on January 13 of this year, by a beloved brother, Raphael. Nearly all her life was spent in the vicinity of Winchester. At an early age she united with the United Presbyterian church where her willing service will be greatly missed. She attended the Winchester schools and later entered Nurse's Training at Research hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where she graduated at a registered nurse, May 14, 1914. After graduation she was employed as a surgical nurse in the Research hospital for some two years. She was united in marriage to James Cameron CURRY, December 27, 1916. To this union was born one daughter, Hazel Zoe. She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband and daughter, Mrs. Neel FULTON; two grandchildren, Marie and Jimmie Fulton; her mother, Mrs. Alice McDermond; and three sisters, Mrs. Ina WHITAKER and Mrs. Agnes LINDSAY of Nortonville and Mrs. Hazel HADLEY of Jamestown, Calif.

    3. The Oskaloosa Times Jefferson County Friday April 7, 1899 A Hero Laid To Rest. The body of Reuben INGLE, who was killed in Santigao de Cuba, in the late war, arrived in Perry last Monday and was buried in the Underwood cemetery at Williamstown, last Tuesday. The funeral services were conducted at the grave by Rev. McCoy. The body wa in a hermetically sealed coffin, subsequently the relatives were unable to see the remains, which makes the death of the young man doubly hard for the bereaved family to bear. Our sympathy goes out to them in their dreary hours of affliction. It was indeed a sad home coming for those dear to the brave young soldier.

    3. The Oskaloosa Times Jefferson County Friday April 7, 1899 The body of Jas. LANGLEY, a former Medina and Perry boy, went through Perry, on the noon train last Tuesday to Grantville where the remains were interred. Mr. Langley was killed in Cub in the battle of San Juan Hill, last July, the body was in a metallic casket, hermetically sealed as were all of those that were sent from Cuba.

DIXSON and wife, Mrs. Belle TAYLOR, Mrs. Lula BROWNING and Miss Ida KUNKLE. Mrs. Lizzie YOUNG and children, of Topeka, arrived in town last Sunday, and will visit with Mrs. Young's mother, Mrs. J.P. KUNKLE. Miss Bird GRINTER and Miss Linnie COLLEY spent Easter in Topeka with relatives and attended services at the Episcopal church. Mrs. Wick BATTLES and son came up last Sunday evening from Kansas City and will visit a while with her sister, Mrs. Jas. GRINTER, near Newman.

The Valley Falls New Era Thursday April 21, 1910 John BOOTH has made some improvements at his residence changing his east porch, adding a bath room with a big tub in which he can take a plunge. Mrs. G.H. DAWSON returned last Friday from a five weeks visit at Atchison at the beside of her mother, Mrs. Ellen MOUNCE, who was seriously ill with double pneumonia, but is now on the road to recovery. And while there Mrs. Dawson's grandmother, Mrs. McQUEEN, died of old age, or in her 88th year.

After a lingering illness Mrs. Jane HUGHAN, died at the home of Mrs. Hattie RATZ, Wednesday morning in her 84th year. She with her husband John Hughan, was a pioneer in this vicinity. For 55 years she has lived on the old farm east of town, with her faithful and dutiful son George. For more than 50 years she was widow. The funeral was held from the Congregational Church Thursday afternoon, Rev. Drake officiating at the services. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

    3. The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday April 14, 1910 Death of Mrs. Hochstatler. After a short illness, Mrs. Wm. HOCHSTATLER died on the Reese farm Friday, April 8, 1910, aged 22 years last February. She was much loved by all who knew her and was well prepared with all church ceremonies, and the fulfillment of her worldly duties to meet her Heavenly Father. With her mother, Mrs. STINE, she came to Templeton, Iowa, where they resided and where she was united in marriage to Wm. Hochstatler, Feb. 18, 1908. A year ago they moved to Valley Falls, Kansas. To this union one daughter, Rosanna, was born. Besides her husband and child she leaves to mourn, her mother, two sisters, Katie Stine and Mrs. Anna MACKIE, all of Templeton, Iowa, and one brother, Peter Stine of Valley Falls. Those from abroad who attended the funeral, which was held from the Catholic church, Monday morning, Father Anthony officiating in the soleman presence of a large congregation, were mother Stine and daughter Kate, and Mary Hochstatler, of Templeton, Iowa, Rannard Theilen and Joe Hansom of Chanute, Kansas. The burial was in the new Catholic cemetery in Oak Hill east of town.
